Hey guys,

It's time for a new company car and now that I'm not doing a huge amount of miles I thought I'd go for something small and hopefully a bit of fun.

I've narrowed it down to two:

Mini Cooper Chilli

VW Golf TSI

I really like the quirky looks of the mini but the geek in me loves the engine in the golf. Neither is all that fast but fast enough. The company insists I buy an auto so it'll be the DSG Golf or Steptronic Mini.

What are your thoughts?

The Mini will be more fun to drive with the go-kart esque handling. The Golf i suppose will be like any other golf? Boring? No sure on the auto boxes, havn't driven either.

DSG Golf because Steptronic Mini will be tedious.

Agreed, the Step boxes on the Mini aren't the best.

Handling the Mini will beat the Golf hands down, but you'll get fed up of the box.

The mini could drive you mental if my workmate's comments are anything to go by. If you have rough roads around you then don't even consider it. :p

I personally wouldn't bother with any DSG Golf apart from an R32 as it seems to defeat the object. Why do they insist on an auto? I would try pushing Green Credentials with them and look for a manual (even if, technically the DSG is great - they might not know that!) ;)

i cant understand why anyone wouldnt want a DSG? it's quicker than a manual is and doesnt use any more petrol or power, no downside!

Unless I was buying an R32 I wouldn't bother. To me there is no involvement. With the R32, I would just want the power delivered in the most efficient manner possible which makes sense, with anything else, I'll take the interaction with the gearbox, thanks :)

Maybe I'm weird!

As it's a fully expensed company car it could technically be used by anyone within the company (even though I have primary use of it for company and private stuff).

Over here you can take your test in an auto and still be allowed to drive a manual. Unfortunately that means there's a stack load of people who are completely **** at driving manuals, including a lot at my work. :(

My other option is a 3.5L V6 Holden Commodore SV6. It's a weeee bit faster :D but I don't really need a car that big.

I think I'll probably go with the Golf unless anyone can think of another similar fun car at about that price point.

Andy how common are the cars in Oz? I'd go for something that would set you apart a little :) I quite like the technology behind the TSI engine, if I was in Oz I'd go for a big muscle car but... it's your call of course! ;)

The Commodore is this one:

Meh I might just get it. The wing makes it a bugger to park though, you can't see anything out the back. Kinda drinks petrol too although I'm not paying for it so I guess that doesn't matter.

I'm used to driving light sporty cars, previously had an Elise, MR2 MK3 and MX-5 and have always preferred a good handling car over one with out and out speed.

Unfortunately 2 seaters don't seem to make it onto the company's list of cars. :(

That and an Elise here is $100,000

Still I shouldn't bloody compain, a free car's a free car!

I would without a doubt go for the holden, it looks pretty nice and the lowest spec engine is 238bhp, got a nice looking interior is well if you ask me, i wouldnt worry about it being a bigger car you'll very quickly get used to the size :)

The 1.4 TSI packs a punch and would be an easy drive with DSG, looking at that Holden it would be far more fun to drive.
