new compact camera with RAW

I'm looking to replace my ageing canon A70 with something of a similar physical size and costs about £200.

I'm after one that can save raw files for messing with HDR, and AE bracketing would be a bonus for the same reason thought not absolutely necessary. My attempts at using jpegs for HDR was just rubbish, and with a holiday in croatia coming up in may I fancy a new camera for then.

Can anyone recommend something suitable?

cheers

Not sure you can get a compact with raw that's within your budget.

Only one I've found is the Panasonic DMC-LX2 which can be had for around £250 if you shop around.

Hi there I too have an ageing A70 and I started a similar thread some time ago about HDR and RAW and received some very helpful replies.

I believe this compact has RAW, I haven't seen it for sale yet but stated price is £250 perhaps it will be cheaper when it arrives.

I might wait and see what the reviews for the Sony DSC-H9 and DSC-H7 are before purchasing a replacement for my A70. Many have voiced their opinions about the noise issues of the panasonics. I'd be interested to know what you come up with and what you eventually purchase.

I have the Panasonic DMC-LX1 as a "commuter" camera. Noise levels are quite high at anything more than ISO80. I think the LX2 is similar from the DP Review site. I read somewhere that Canon have removed RAW files usage from compacts so that they can be used exclusively in DSLRs.

Have seen the FZ8 for £199 inc 1 gb memory card. It looks a very good camera and the review on DPreview looks very favourable. I had been looking at getting a DSLR but this FZ8 is making me think would I be able to get the most out of D40/40X to justify the extra cost.

I've had an LX2 since Christmas, I bought it purely for the portability - cant be lugging my D60 around when I'm out with the little lad! To be honest, its ok - the 'wide' 16:9 comes in handy, and its got all the usual controls you'd look for - aperture / shutter priority, manual, white balance adjustment, spot metering etc. But I'm with Milou - the noise gets to be a problem if you set iso over and above 100.
However if you accept the limitations, its a pretty neat point and shoot, which has a few creative options if you feel in the mood. Great quality build, too, and a wonderful big wide LCD screen on the back! Might be worth a look, if it's within budget.
I hope that helps!

I've been doing a bit of checking on the LX2 and I think that's what I'll probably go for. It does look like noise can be a problem with it though...are you guys using noise ninja or similar to clean the pics up and do they come out ok?

The FZ8 looks good, but I'm after as compact a camera as possible - ideally no bigger than my current A70 as I tend to carry it in my pocket (not good I know). I have a trip to Croatia planned in May so need to get a camera delivered by then for the holiday.

The cheapest I've seen the LX2 in the UK is a tadge over £200 for a silver one on the bay, and it seems a steal at that price. Widescreen photos, RAW, ae bracketing...seems to tick all the boxes

This may help, both taken from dp review site FZ8 today, A 70 downloaded some time ago - I couldn't see it there today!

FZ8: 112.5 x 72.2 x 79 mm............. 310 gramms

Canon A70: 101 x 64 x 32 mm .............. 335 gramms

I'll upload a couple of examples later, and you can have a look! I got a few nice shots when I was in London last, of the London Eye, and Westminster, so will dig them out. :)
