Hi everyone

I’m looking to replace my current 2014 4790K, R9 290, 1080p 60hz build, which has served me well but starting to show its age. I will be using the PC purely for gaming and would like to add a 3080, whenever they become more readily available…

Do these parts look OK or would you recommend differently?

- Corsair 850w RM850X (is this enough for a 3080?)
- 1TB Samsung 980 Pro M.2
- 32GB (4x8GB) Corsair Vengeance PC4-28800 (3600)
- Ryzen 5600X
- MSI MAG X570 TOMAHAWK
- Lian Li PC-011 Dynamic Midi

I’ve already ordered case fans + AIO cooler.

I also need to get a monitor and I’m really tempted by a 34” ultrawide. Any suggestions up to about £700?

Thank you in advance.

The 980 is very expensive, I know it is the only PCI-E 4 NVME from Samsung, what about a 970 Evo plus? Samsung, a bit slower but cheaper. 980 pro is also out of stock.

X570, those boards have tiny fans on them, why not B550? I know MSI have a B550 Mag Tomahawk for around £169.99. Solid board and silent.

I believe 850 watts is enough. That PSU is gold rated from memory.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't know about the tiny fans!

Are there any big differences between the x570 and b550? I thought I read the b550 needed a bios flash for Ryzen 5000 series, but maybe got that wrong?

I know the 980 is expensive but I was swayed by the stated speeds! Is the real world difference insignificant?

B550 and x570 will need a bios update to accept ghe 5000 seroes cpu, bios flashback feature allows this to be done which the tomahawk has.

M2 drives the is no real difference day to day performance between pcie4 v pcie3, the faster speed of the pcie4 drive can be advantageous moving large files betwen 2 pcie4 drives.

Thanks for the heads up with the bios flashing, that's good to know.

Is it recommended to go with 2 or 4 sticks of RAM?

For monitor consider Acer ultrawide 144hz

X570 has more PCI - 4 lanes. The chipset for B550 is PCI - 3, the CPU is PCI-4 level. But the extra bandwidth creates more heat and wattage demand. Plus X570 boards are more expensive.

980 Pro, from what reviews I have seen, in real world the difference between PCI-4 and PCI 3 NVME is not that much. If you do get a 970 evo plus, you can always get another with PCI-4 later when the prices drop to sane levels.

Thanks for the heads up with the bios flashing, that's good to know.

If you want RGB, heh four sticks look prettier. This chipset is dual channel RAM, so that is the important factor, minimum two matching sticks. Re four sticks vs two, I had two sticks, and I have had four sticks, apart from more memory, I notice no difference. Look on YouTube for scientific testing?

Got it, thanks everyone for the advice.

One final thing, I've purchased some Lian Li uni fans and a Lian li AIO cooler. I'm not familiar with RGB at all but have read there are different types of ARGB connectors and 5v/12v... Will the MSI board work with this? Are certain boards more compatible with Lian Li's RGB?

Looking at the manuals for the fans and the MSI motherboard, both use a 5v 3 pin, so I think it's fine. Just my naivety when it comes to RGB!

Very little difference even to SATA SSD.
So PCIe v4 drive should come at "raising cattle by feeding them banknotes" budget category.

And Samsung drives are usually more or less brand overpriced.
£120 would get 1TB full speed PCIe v3 NVMe.

With starting level being £95.

And 2TB drive starting from £194.

Thanks for the m.2 advice, thats really useful.
I'll be ordering some bits later today.

Just need to decide on a monitor.. oh and wait forever for 3080s to become available! :(
