New computer - Dead already.

Hi all,

I recently bought a cheap custom rig from OCUK and it's dead already and I have no idea why.

The computer was absolutely fine for two months, no real hiccups or anything then yesterday it just wouldn't turn on. First of all I checked all the plugs, wires etc just to make sure nothing was lose/damaged and that was all fine.

When the computer is plugged into the power, the green LED on the motherboard does light up, but it doesn't turn on at all, no noise, no movement or anything inside.

I tried taking the RAM out and sitting it back in. I thought it may be the PCU so I've just tested it with the 'paperclip method' and the PCU does appear to have some power. I could feel cold air coming out of it, but I can't see movement.

What else could I try? I've tried contacting OCUK but don't seem to be getting anywhere with them...

I'm a bit of a newb with hardware testing so please bare with me.

When you tried the paperclip method did u atach a fan to the psu to make sure it spins ?

Hello mate,

Yes stupid me, fans work perfectly with no issues. No loss of RPM on the fans or anything.

did you check the power connecters from the power button on the case to the mobo to make sure they have not come loose or knocked?

have you also checked the other power connecter? (not the 24 pin one but the 4\8 connecter)

Few more things to try:

Find out how to start up your system without pressing the Start button on the case. Instructions should be included in the motherboard manual. It may even have a button on the board, or it'll be a case of shorting some pins.

If that doesn't work, try clearing CMOS (again read motherboard manual for this).

I've checked the power connects on the mobo and they all appear to be secure, there is this one in the photo that I've not noticed before that is attached to the connecter that's currently occupying the SPDIE_OUT socket. Should this be plugged in somewhere? I can't see where it would fit.

Did you build the pc yourself or did you buy it from overclockers ?

I'm assuming that you mean SPDIF_OUT ?

Thats an internal audio cable and will have no effect on booting and the general running of the PC - So that's not the issue

I bought it from OCUK and they built it.

Why are you even messing with it yourself? Take it back and get them sort it out.

RESOLVED THANKS TO YOU MATE!

Had to short the pins to power it up and it's all working as intended. The power switch is faulty, not loose so I've spoke to OCUK and they'll be sending me a new one.

I've connected the restart button to the power pins on the mobo and I'll just use that button instead for the time being!

Glad it turned out to have an easy fix. Everyone helped because you'd already been through other things in the troubleshoot list thanks to them. Good on you for not giving up and trying all the suggestions.
