Need some help choosing either a complete new build or off the shelf computer. Budget is around £1000.00 to £1200.00. Going to be used for all the normal stuff, but must be able to game well. thanks for your help.

Do you just need the PC itself? Or the extras too like monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers or headset etc? If it's just for the rig itself then you can get a really nice PC for ~£1100 region.

You can get more for your money if you don't mind building one? Pre-builts always carry an extra cost for the build fee and convenience etc. Could be a fun project to do with your grandson maybe, if you could help build it with him? :p

Obviously if you definitely need pre-built, then not to worry! Do you know what sort of games he plays?

It's just the PC, I happy to build my self, games he plays ? fortnight, Destiny 2 Battlefield, I would guess it would be best to buy near the top end for future proofing.

Something like the below would be perfect then for him :)

Ryzen 3600, 16GB RAM (with RGB duh), AMD 5700 XT GPU is a great combination. Then combined with a 1TB NVMe drive, a solid PSU and bit of RGB bling with good airflow case - should be pretty much spot on for a grandson? :p

Edit: Swapped the mobo to X570 Aorus Elite, as unsure of the release date for B550 stock landing.

Edit2: Does he need WiFi actually, or will his PC be wired via ethernet? If he needs wifi, there are some mobo alternatives with built-in wifi...

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,160.89 (includes shipping: £0.00)

That's the best price I've seen on a decent 5700XT for ages, although we're not far from new GPU launches so I'm not sure I'd want to invest that much into a GPU right now.

This RAM is faster and cheaper, but obviously you lose the RGB which might be something your Grandson wants:

Some of the B550's might also be worth looking at.

I'd consider an exhaust fan for that case if you go for it too.

B550 elite + one of the best XT cards and comes with a 4 yr UK warranty (register online for 4th year )

Need WiFi then Grab the Pro AC b550. Puts to shame most x570 boards.

@orbitalwalsh I originally spec'd the Gigabyte B550 mate, but OcUK replied to me earlier and stated the first batch of B550 boards they are "hoping" to see next month, and that was only certain SKUs. And others have no order in place or ETA at all... Not looking good.

The Aorus GPU but another £50, I mean yeah it's worth it. Just depends if OP can justify the extra :D

Given the latency on that RAM I'm willing to bet the Hyper X 3333/CL16 stuff is at least on par and probably faster.

Would slap 4000hz kit for £128 on the b550 haha .

Seems a good price for the 3333hz kit. Prob set the speed for 3466hz easily enough

If no gaming monitor I.e sync tech and 144hx then drop to 5700 non XT, cheaper board and 4 core ryzen 3100 for monitor

Yeah, easy imo.

Tbh there's an 'alright' price on some 3200 Samsung B-Die that I think is binned on OCUK at the moment, the 8 Pack stuff that I expect could hit 4000 + without an issue.

I say alright on the basis that the better 3600 non b-die kits are around £100 + anyway, might as well swing for the b-die at that point tbh.

Edit:

This stuff:

Although from what I understand they're basically identical outside of the preset speeds/xmp profiles. If you're spending £100 + on 3600 memory anyway I'd just spend the extra tbh.

Very, very nice!

The B550 Master is such a nice board too... I might have to get one when Zen 3 hits.

Just knowing it's limits . Running triple PCIe 4.0 m.2 with say 3090 or Big Navi will cost you 10+ FPS due to having to split main x16 lanes . Speed on the bottom to m.2 will be fast but slightly higher latency . Aorus and I believe ASRocks round about over B550 only being PCIe 3.0 from CPU to chipset unlike x570 being PCIe 4.0 .
Have heard though Master is only board to have USB 3.1 Gen 2 to be wired directly to CPU via IO panel .

I keep saying it, I’d like to spec B550 boards. But OcUK have explained they only ‘hope’ to start getting stock of the B550 boards from next month onwards. And that’s on select SKUs only.

The X570 Tomahawk stock OcUK only got a few recently which immediately went and didn’t even clear back orders. The latest update from MSI is the next batch wouldn’t leave their factory til mid July due to PCB supply problems. I imagine that’s a global issue due to manufacturing with COVID-19.

There are clear supply issues. I wouldn’t bother until stock actually lands tbh... Or people don’t mind waiting up to 1-2 months for their build to arrive.

Toma x579 was 6-8 months to late for the market. General Aorus been the go to for price/features and rep support in here .

Can't remember if MSI started to build more back in Taiwan the. China due to trade war

Thanks for the reply's, the only thing I have my doubts on is the size micro atx, I've never built one, but that 's not a problem or owned one, how good are these small comps, mu own comp is full size Bequiet system which you can hardly hear, runs nice and cool, I would i mange that the small systems have to work harder to keep cool and looking at the motherboards they seem to loose some of the features found on larger systems. I've also looked into the gpu cards and cant see to much difference between the rx5700 the 2070, he has told me now that he will be using a dual monitor on it so that might make a difference in card choice, any thoughts ?

No different to building ATX, just 25% smaller :p They aren't your mini ITX or other crazy small builds... Cooling not usually much more effort if you have a good case and airflow.

But if you look at my spec (post #4) I suggested a good ATX build anyway... :)

Dual monitors isn't an issue, any modern GPU over the last many years can run dual/triple (some even quad) displays no sweat. Doesn't matter if you go NVIDIA or AMD, just go with whatever is best bang for buck performance wise. The 5700 XT I suggested in my spec is a great deal and performs almost identically to a 2070 Super.
