I've got an old Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 based system which is showing it's age, and have thought about upgrading to an i7 based system.

I thought about these components:

Asus P6X58D-E http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-399-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1692
Intel Core i7 950 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-344-IN
Thermaltake Frio http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-031-TT
Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-169-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1389
Silverstone RV02 Raven http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-065-SV&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=1092

With that I thought I'd add Windows 7.

I have an ATi 4870 1GB vga card, a Be Quiet! 650W PSU, Samsung F1 1TB HD, and X-Fi sound card which I'll recycle from my current system.

I'd like to upgrade my monitor (got a Samsung 2032BW 21") but am unsure if IPS is worth going for; I'd like a 23"-24" one though, £300 maximum cost. I use my computer for gaming, video editing and some photo editing.

What do you think of this system outline? All comments welcome. Thanks :)

If you went for an i5 7xx rather than an i7, you could upgrade your GPU too (sell the 4870 too). Result would be a much faster gaming rig. i7 is worth nothing in games over i5 7xx, but can give up to 25% max (usually less) over i5 7xx in rendering/encoding apps, albeit for a 67% increase in CPU price plus more expensive mobo too.

Thanks for the replies :)

Those monitor links are very interesting.

On the cpu issue, is a i5 760 as future proof as a i7 930-950 in gaming terms? What about video editing? I believe a i7 would be better, but would a i5 still be a reasonable performer?

Comparison at same clock speeds that also includes game results...

They are both EOL sockets. There is the hex-core CPU upgrade if you go for the i7 platform, but in reality the hex-core current i7s will remain stupidly priced until they dissappear. By the time anyone needs a hex core they will be available as a mainstream part on the latest socket outperforming and cheaper than 1356 hex-cores. Not much benefit to i7 over i5 for the price increase, but up to you at the end of the day.

World of Warcraft is the game I play mostly, and is I believe a fairly cpu-heavy title. From the AnandTech comparisons, seems the i5 760 does pretty well in terms of WoW performance; I imagine the performance to value ratio is reasonable.
