Hi

I have currently got a AMD 64 3500+ Winnie, I was thinking its time to upgrade, but what cpu should I go for? I have around £300 to spend.

I was looking at the AMD 64 3700+ SD, or the AMD 64 4000+ SD. Which of these chips will I see some sort of noticable performance increase?

Or is there some other chips you guys could Recomend :)

John

I don't think the performance increase would be that huge... I reckon you could go for a X2 3800 or 4200.. dual core and it would be more future proof

Theres no real need for you to upgrade, you wont notice much performance increase, save the money up until say next xmas when your cpu will struggle and make the move to dual core, by then it should be in full swing.

What's your full spec and what do you use your pc for? Maybe there's a better way of spending the money if it's burning a hole in your pocket.

Hi

Thanx for all the advice, at the moment my system is
AMD 64 3500+ Winnie
Asus A8N SLI motherboard
Geforce 7800 GTX 256mb
Audigy 2
1gb G.SKill memory

I use my computer for gaming and thats about it, and the occaisonal cd burn. So I am not sure if I am ready for a dual core just yet.

Maybe I should invest in 2GB of memory to make it run a bit smoother then??

John

Hi

2GB of memory will make it run smoother. The 3700+ is the same as the 3500+ but with double the cache - it will give a boost in performance but not enough to warrant an upgrade from one to the other. The 4000+ has double the cache and its 200Mhz faster but still this isn't a huge improvement

You could try clocking your Winnie to give yourself a boost in performance. I'd consider dual core chips - they will make windows far more responsive and will help with multi-tasking. At the moment with a dedicated gaming PC they're not properly utilised but this is changing - Quake 4 and COD2 have patches to improve performance on dual core systems, FEAR is said to have multi-threaded elements and UT2007 is said to be multi-threaded

The X2 3800+ is effectively two A64 3200+ CPUs, the X2 4200+ is two A64 3500+ CPUs and the X2 4400+ is two A64 3700+ CPUs

I would rather save the money and wait a bit longer, there's nothing wrong with your prozzer at the moment, so why change it ???

If you do want to upgrade then go for the 2GB memory, or why not look at once of those new 150GB Raptors :)

Hi,

All I can say is, you have a *sweet* system and there is absolutely no need at all to upgrade :)

The symptons you are experiencing are known as *upgradus maximus*

looking at the specs you listed I would say don't change a thing, 1GB of RAm is sweet, and with new AMD DDR2 systems appearing this summer I don't see DDR ram as a good investment.

Dunno if you have a decent LCD monitor, I made the move from CRT just one year ago, but hands down it was one of the best upgrades I made in a while :) (DELL 2404FPW)

If you have a kickass monitor already I would say hang in there for another 6 months and look again in summer,

have fun and watch out for the crazies!! :p
