Hey,

I am getting fed up with temps reaching the mid 60's when priming with the fans at max on my H50 so it is time for an upgrade :)

I have a budget of about £80 and am also looking for low temps and low noise.

I was looking at the Noctua NH-D14 and was wondering if it would fit in the CM 690 II Advanced? I was also wondering what is the clearance for the RAM? I have the G-Skill Ripjaws RAM (the old 1.65v version).

Or should I go for the H100 for an extra £20?

Nice, I was about to recommend the Archon as well. Good luck, hope you get the temps you desire with your shiny new cooler. :D

Large heatsink fin array provides dissipating area of up to 150*125mm

This statement makes me extremely unhappy. I'm not sure what that set of dimensions is referring to, but from the looks of it that's the dimensions of the array of fins. Which isn't the same as the dissipating area, which would be the area of each fin, doubled as they're two sided, then multiplied by the number of fins. Surely the manufacturers should be getting such simple figures correct? Hardly inspires confidence.

Sorry, I know this post doesn't help you in your search for a CPU cooler, but when I notice something like this I can't just let it slide. :p

The gap between the heatsink plates is 2.0 mm. the calculated effective heatsink surface measures around 9,000 cm2, which is more than 2,500 cm2 smaller than by Silver Arrow (11,560 cm2), but a little bigger than by ThermoLab BARAM 2010 (8,900 cm2).

Not sure where oc got their info from, i think it refers to the face on size of the fin array.

Seriously?

If OP complains about having to run full speed on a H50 I am thinking they won't want two of the fans blasting away.

Noctua D14 or TR silver arrow. Best air coolers if they fit.

+1 for Noctua D14

My test 4.20GHz 21x200 @ 1.31vcore (for someone poor cpu chip) results:

Noctua stock fans 1 x 140mm with 1 x 120mm max temp 77C
Viper fans 2 x 120mm max temp 75C
Viper fan 1 x 120mm max temp 78C
Noctua 2 x 140mm max temp 74C
Noctua 140mm and Viper 120mm max temp 73C

My test 4.20GHz 21x200 @ 1.23vcore ( my cherry cpu chip) results:

Noctua stock fans 1 x 140mm with 1 x 120mm max temp 73C
Viper fans 2 x 120mm max temp 71C
Viper fan 1 x 120mm max temp 74C
Noctua 2 x 140mm max temp 70C
Noctua 140mm and Viper 120mm max temp 69C

The archon performs better than both at the same noise level (eg 2 degrees better than the silver arrow under load with the same fans and speeds in the xbit review), it is too tall for some cases though. It's been really well designed.

The Silver Arrow is easily better than the Archon.

With two fans at 1310rpm the SA is 32 idle and 79 load whereas the archon is 33 idle 77 load. At 810rpm the archon is 1 degree better at idle and 3 degrees better at load. Maybe they got lucky with there sample and the slightly curved base of the archon matched the cpu ihs really well whereas the SA didn't so much.

Maybe, but I personally found the Silver Arrow to be much better. I generally trust xbit's reviews but at the same time, I can't see how the archon can be better based on its design.

Hey guys, it has arrived and I have installed it, but it isn't as good as I was expecting :(

Installed it intaking air from the front and then pushing out of the back. At 4GHz running IBT on extreme, the temps reach 62*c pretty quick. The fans are on maximum and I have tried reseating the heatsink but no change.

Also, the middle fan (140mm I think?) is pretty loud without the resistor :(
