hey all, so im stuck in a dilemma...
so ive got a sabertooth p67 motherboard, 4gb dominators, radeon hd4870. i still need to buy the case, power supply and processor. ive got 180 currently, but have got more coming in over the next few weeks. im wondering, should i buy a 2500k or 2600k, and get a case and psu over the next few weeks, or get the case and power supply now, have around 50 left over towards a processor, and wait until ivy bridge comes out next month? has there been any announcements on prices for the chips? and what the equivalent to the 2500k will be?
thanks.
stephen

because i was thinking, i could just buy a g530 to use for now ( they are only like £29.99 brand new!) which will handle what im doing at the moment, and then in 2-4 months, when they ivy bridge chips have been reviewed and tested, i could buy the ivy chip and keep that g530 as a spare backup.

so i could get a g530 and just get his 2500k when he sells it, but again, this is the dilemma i face, buy a top notch cpu now, or buy a cheap cpu and wait to get the cheap 2500k or an ivy bridge chip...

If you originally were going to wait 6 weeks to get his 2500K and now suggest you might even think about getting an IB chip. Why not just stick with what you've got now for ~6 weeks (however long it is until they are brought out) and buy an IB yourself.

thats just it, currently, i have nothing, i dont have a cpu at the mo, which is why i was thinking of gettin a g530.

It's like £30-40 wasted though if you go for that, I can't imagine anyone would buy it off you so no resale value. It's whether you feel like you can't wait 6-7 weeks for IB or would like to be able to do almost next to nothing with a g530, pushing it to its limits playing a youtube video and spend £30-40.

If you've got something else to access the internet or even an xbox to pass the time... I think you should just wait. I've had a few Celerons in the past, unfortunately and they have always been absolutely terrible and bottlenecking instantly.

I know what I would do... I would moan to my girlfriend how I am bored until I drove her mad.

Getting an i5 2500K for £95 is a real bargain.

For a short term CPU, a G530 or G630 would be a good option and get your system up and running and play games like BF3 and Skyrim well enough (in many cases you will be limited by the HD 4870 graphics card, not the dual core CPU).

Once you are done with it you can just sell the pentium and get a bit of you money back (there is a big market for them with people looking for lower-end cheap systems).

seems legit.
the problem is either way, ive gotta wait at least 6 weeks to get either my friends 2500k for 95 or an ivy bridge processor. i didnt want 2 go and buy a 2500k in case ivy bridge is much better you see...
ill just buy the case and power supply for now, and look at cpus later i think, its such a hard choice lol.
thanks

To be clear - Ivy Bridge will be 10-20% faster than a Sandy Bridge CPU clock-for-clcok - depending on the application. In gaming however, there will basically be no performance difference unless you are running £500+ of graphics cards or a particularly CPU heavy (read: badly coded) game.

If you are mainly gaming and have the choice between a ~£180 Ivy Bridge i5 3570K and a £95 i5 2500K - then I would go with the 2500K all day.

As for what to do now, if you already have most of the components then personally I would buy a s1155 pentium now - so you can get running and get 6 weeks worth of productivity and gaming instead of just waiting with a cpu-less box. As I mentioned earlier - selling the pentium on when you get the quad core CPU shouldn't be much trouble as there are a lot of people out there looking for good deals on these type of CPUs.

thanks man, i think ima do that :) or look out for a 50 quidish second hand i3 2100, thats actually more than sufficient for gaming to be honest. but yeah thanks for the advice!

I'd be very surprised if Ivy was anywhere near 20% better clock for clock, it's looking more like 5-10 at very best.

I was just going from this info - in most cases indeed it isn't 20%, but in some situations it is, hence why I said it.

But I think we agree on principle - the performance improvement for games with this new CPU isn't substantial and if you are going to get a great deal on a i5 2500K then take it - not a brand new Ivy bridge.

Save your money till you can afford to buy what you want don't waste it on cheap rubbish that'll you'll be fed up of within a few weeks.

The pentium CPUs are certainly cheap - but I wouldn't say rubbish.

For example in this gaming test on the CPU-heavy Skyrim the Pentium G630 beats the very popular AMD Phenom II X4 955BE and X6 1090T CPUs.

Not too bad for a short term CPU - it will certainly get the system up, running and playing modern games in the couple of months until he can buy the cheap i5 2500K off his friend. When he sells the pentium on he will most likely make a ~£20 loss compared to what he paid, however for ~8 weeks worth of computer use and PC gaming I would say a £20 price a good deal.
