New CPU - E8600 or Q9550

My E0 has hit 3.8 without breaking a sweat, but doesn't want to go any higher. But I'm pretty sure that's down to the fact that I'm using 4x1gb though, as filling all the memory slots is known to hold back overclocking sometimes.

:eek: If the q9550 e0 are anything like the q9650 then 3.3Ghz will be a waste.

My q9650 will do 4Ghz at under VID (1.23v) and 3ghz at 1.02v so I reckon at stock volts you should be good for 3.6 to 3.8Ghz.
 
I had my q9550 at 3.4ghz on stock volts for a few days, decided to give it a wee push to 3.6ghz with a tiny vcore raise, may have a go at bringing the voltage down a bit though, or push the clock a bit more:D
 
What stepping Q9550's have people been getting from OcUK recently?

My fingers hovering over the buy button but would obviously prefer a E0.
 
lots of support for the quads from other posters but dont forget that its harder to oc a quad on most motherboards compared to a dual core. Depending on the games you play a quad may not be the best option. The P35 chipset is quite a good chipset (runs quite hot compared to P45 though) also what configuration of memory are youusing to reach 8GB? you may struggle to get a stable oc depending on what how many modules you are using and what type etc? Given that you say you do a lot of number crunching though a quad perhaps with a slightly lower clock would be best.... I try for a Q9650 if budget will stretch

It'll be 4x2GB Geil 5-5-5-15 (when I buy the memory)
 
Ordered earlier :D

Managed to find some decently priced 8500 RAM which has very decent timings.

OCZ Platinum 8500 5-5-5-18 1066MHz
Q9550 which will be overclocked to 3.4GHz+

yeah mine was E0 :P so I could get it up to 4.0Ghz depends if my reapers would let me, or I m just a mem oc noob :P

What kind of voltages do you need to get it to 4.0GHz?

I think I'll just set the FSB to 400MHz and the memory multiplier to 2.5 pretty much out-the-box. Those settings should give 3.4GHz with the RAM running near enough full speed.

I'm guessing the serial/part number on top of the CPU will tell me whether it's E0 or not?

no brainer but think about all that extra heat you have to dissipate!

im not really biased against quads btw im currently putting together an I7 rig!
