So the tax man has refunded me my own money and am thus looking to upgrade :)

Currently run a Nehalem i7 930 overclocked to 3.8Ghz , DDR3 memory and a GTX 770 graphics card.

Simple question, better off upgrading the CPU etc to something like a Ryzen 5 or Core i5 (skylake or newer) with 16Gb DDR4 or the graphics card?

Purely gaming at 1920x1200 resolution, games like Battlefield 1, DOW 3, Elite Dangerous and FPS' in general.

had i7 860@4Ghz, jumped to i5 7600k @5Ghz and saw 10+ fps on 960/1060/1070 etc etc - so you will see a jump with CPU/mobo/ram upgrade

with my 1st gen Intel I did notice a nice gain using DX12 when I could compared to DX11- newer cores didn't show as much increase

few questions are, how much cash did he give you back? and what frame rate is your monitor and whats your FPS currently in those games and at what setting ?

I think GPU upgrade would be most beneficial, however your CPU may become the bottleneck when gaming at high res/settings.

will be a bottleneck :( but could be live-able with gaming or scaling at higher res- coffee-lake is perfect step up for 1st Gen and 2nd gen owners - or Ryzen

the core design from 1st gen to now or 3rd gen is greatly changed

True, the ideal situation would be to upgrade all of it, but he has to pick one or the other ;)

I think I will upgrade the CPU as that will be the bottleneck, as you say the design will have improved and changed greatly. I can live with the GFX settings as they are not at max settings for the latest games etc, the 770 seems fast enough. Will do the GFX card next year after paying for Christmas...

thanks guys

whats your budget ???

Around the 500 quid mark for CPU/MOBO/RAM , then graphics card about 300 I reckon.

Best bang for buck board and ram with ryzen 1700- 1600 would perform the same but would get more mileage with 1700 and its on sale! along with ram and board :)
B350 chip set will overclock the same as x370 and with stock cooler should get 3.7/8Ghz

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £522.47
(includes shipping: £10.50)

or the best board in the game- Taichi - went with 1600x , it doesnt come with a fan and 1600 OC the same but its the better Bin chip and with the Taichi board, should be able to squeeze 0.25/0.5 Ghz hz from the core along with pushing 8-Pack ram to 3466/3600 hz
does over shoot though :(

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £618.47
(includes shipping: £10.50)

Intel - slightly more- dropping to normal Team Group memory will save cash but that ram should hit 3800hz with intel boards :D also £20 steam voucher with the board

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £546.47
(includes shipping: £10.50)

as with the GPU- worth seeing how it goes tomorrow and then 2nd when 1070 Ti hits the stores for pricing war... if it happens
My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,271.06
(includes shipping: £11.10)

Okay went for the Ryzen 5 1600, 16Gb Dark T-Force 3000Mhz ram and Gigabyte GA-AB350 Gaming 3 motherboard in the end and its fantastic , under 500 quid too. My system now boots very quickly (with the SSD) and games I can crank up to higher settings than before with no slowdown. So new GFX card soon which will make this thing perfect for me.

thanks for the advice everyone.
