hi i currently have a amd64 3000, 1.256 gb ram, nvidia 7800 gtx 500w psu and im looking to upgrade my cpu and mother board any sugestions looking to spend bout £200 ish

I was thinkin a core 2 duo e6300 with a gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 ive found both for £199 is there anything better out there? ne one no if prices will fall soon? hope you all can help me here thanx

also OCZ® Special Operation Edition 2GB DDR2 PC2-5400 667Mhz, 4-4-4-12 Dual Channel Kit with Spec Ops Camouflage Heatspreader £108.09 Inc VAT

coz my ram iss ddr400 not ddr2

Any reason why you were going to go for a DQ6?

A DS3 is cheaper and loads have had good clocks from it. I would also recommend going for the E4300 instead as it would overclock better than the E6300. You would need to get better CPU cooling though, by getting something like a Tuniq Tower or Thermalright Ultra-120.

There is some nice GeIL 2GB ram on special offer this week, absolute bargain too. I would snap that up immediately!! :)

pretty much same spec here, A64 3000+, 1GB Geil Value 2.5 DC, 7800GTX. also planninng on going Core2

1st point. Core2 price drops in April 22nd~
2nd. Get a 6400+/6600 if possible (imo from what ive read)
3rd. Get a Asus P5NE-SLi.
4th. ive heard BAD things about the geil 2GB DDR2 kits, lots of RMA's, grab other ram, but buy 6400+ stuff.

Where did you hear this? Sure enough there have been some faulty kits sent out, but thats the case with all hardware. I'm sure the amount of RMA's on OCZ, Crucial etc is very similar to GeIL. If there are problems you can always send it back turn around is a few days. GeIL is fantastic RAM, it is highly spoken of and at that price I would be ordering some straight away no hesitations!

Well the Asus has a nVidia chipset and the Gigabyte DS3 has an intel chipset. I personally would go for the DS3, its an impressive board and some have reported good overclocks with the core 2 CPUs on this forum! :)

what mobo is best then?

I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. As an aside, a friend of mine has just managed a 100% overclock of an e4300 with a P5B!!

They are all capable of 400MHz FSBs though, so take your pick.

S3 is a tenner cheaper than the DS3 and differs only in having a 3 year guarantee versus 5 year (due to solid state capacitors oooh)

However the DS3, S3 and DQx are all solid boards. GeIL 6400 ram + a 4300 is a definite winner. Ludicrously easy overclocks

I don't know about the 'faster clock for clock comment' - that's quite a statement with nothing to back it up.

TBH you'll be fine with either. But you'll be grateful of the extra multiplier of the 4300...
