Morning all

I think it's about time I moved up to the i7 (from my i5) processor.

I'm now thinking whether it might be worth upgrading the motherboard too. And getting some new memory and possibly a new case while I'm at it.

What do you think?
 
if your rocking 3rd gen and above, just grab i7 K version - but as stated above-rest of specs needed as well as your monitor details or what res you'd like to game at in near future

Memory is actually 32GB. And as mentioned, I have a 1080.

Also ignore the display Resolution.

its the fact wou'd have to drop £££3 for a new board, ram and the CPU- specially with Coffee-lake coming out . between the two might lose out on 2-5 FPS due to core speed if you managed to get the 7700k to 5GHz plus. Ram prices have almost doubled in the last 18 months .

In theory jumping from i5 4690 to i7 8700k would see you get the most paper stats increase. 4 Cores 4 threads to 6 cores 12 threads ....
 
you'll have to see the reviews and who big your wallet is. Most members im pretty sure would say sell your i5 and get the i7 version if your after the most cost effective solution .

other might add have you overclocked your current i5? if not do it and can hold out for a little long .

then again, if you can get good money on your current gear and your happy to get new tech some will say its your money, if you game a lot and demand the best then why not

safe to say intel never release a cheaper chip then the last gen- specially this time aorund getting extra cores. slap £20-50 max on he current 7700k

then £150 for 16GB DDR4 and £150 for entry-midrange z370
 
Similar to dual cores several years ago it is getting to the point where quad cores are no longer a good long term bet. The quad cores with 8 threads fair better but still the same problem. As a cheaper fix to improve performance an overclocked i7 could be an idea on the same motherboard if that is possible.
 
Okay, so bag the i7 4790k and overclock it.

Will check the store now.

Edit - has that CPU been discontinued? Can't see it on the ocuk store.

going to have to look at second hand markets for that one- whilst your at it, see how much you can get for yours :)

i7 k's tend to hold their value - as against the newer generation version they proved just as good - might change with coffee lake - if you are going to pick one up- have a look now and wait till after the 5th next month. might have a dump of that Model i7 on the market - or might not

Apex and SOC boards can take higher rated ram- lower priced boards can still run these speeds just fine

i7 cores- standard k model and one thats been picked for go over 5Ghz, de-lid and will run cooler with potentially less volts

80% of 7700k can hit 4.8Ghz but getting to 5Ghz halves then above that drops sharply and take a lot of volts if they havent been delid- and damn good cooling
 
Hmmm so let's call it a grand. I presume I'll have buy another copy of Windows 10. Or can I just throw in my current HDD. HMMMMMM

I'm now thinking I retire my current PC from gaming and use it purely for work and internet surfing.

And putting together a new gaming PC....

used corsair cases in the pas, last being a Ryzen Aorus build in the 460X which was easily enough but Im not a fan of cheap plastic - I like metal- more accurately aluminum .

I do recommend bequiet Pro 900 and Pure 600 as they are good cases.

BTW that case is mATX format, you'd need a bigger case or go for mATX sized motherboards.

again its all about your personal tastes and needs but listed some with the larger Corsair cube models
