Hello Guys

I am seriously considering upgrading my current setup, which is a 2600k cpu @ 4.6, Also i have a 1080 GPU, 16gb of ram that come with the 2600 so prob slow not sure the speed. Have a samsung ssd although not the very fast one. Was wondering what kind of speed increases i would get going to the R7 1700 or even 1800, or waiting for the coffee lake ones, i am sold on getting more core to future proof so dont want 7700 even though it is faster in games.
I primarily use my PC for gaming and streaming occasionally, and play games like pubattlegrounds and H1Z1, Battlefield sometimes.

Edited to add that I use a 1440 monitor and have 2 monitors if that makes much difference.

Thanks for your help.

1700 and the Strix B350 will serve you well for years to come. The wraith cooler can take overclocking also. You need good DDR4 ram at 3200-3466 with low timings.
And why I wrote that.

I would probably wait till the end of the month as Coffee Lake is expected then.

Rumours of 6 core 12 thread 8700k with 4.3ghz all core boost and up to 4.7ghz on one core. Could be a beast for gaming if priced decently.

If it turns out to be crap though i would probably get a 1600x for now on the AM4 platform and then get a zen 2 cpu in 2018/19. Hopefully Zen 2 will bring IPC and clock rates that can rival Intel's top stuff.

Thanks for your replies I think after waiting so long with the 2600k I am sure it can last me another month until I see what CL produces. As a side not is there a reason the overclockers bundles in the store for rizen don't have 3200 memory with them?

Not sure Coffee Lake will really offer much over the R5 1600 if you're gaming at 1440p but it is supposedly very close so if you're not in a hurry it's probably worth waiting.

Would wait for coffee lake also if gaming is main use case. In those CPU bound situation's the stronger single core performance Coffee Lake will offer (Provided it does not go mesh / Cache route like Skylake-X) should prove more useful, then add on the two extra cores and should be the best gaming CPU on the market IMO.

They do seem to offer 3200 MHz memory with the two top end SKU's. Ryzen is a bit more finicky with RAM, so I imagine the Samsung B die's that come in Team Group Pro 8 kit that ships with those bundle's which Ryzen loves and the CPU getting tweaked to get it all working together is in part why your paying a premium. May not be something easily guaranteed with every setup on Ryzen.

thanks, i now see the 3200 ram dont know how i missed it earlier, but like people suggested i think waiting is fine to see what happens in near future.

but it will still be more expensive than a r5 1600 ....
I don't think intel will lower their pricing

Yes but it could be at the normal i7 price point, meaning it will be under £300 - average price for 7700k is about £290 at the moment.

Coffeelake will likely be decently faster than a 1600 courtesy of the better IPC and much higher clocks, especially if the 4.7ghz stock single core boost is to be believed.

not everything is about price.coffeelake may slip into the normal i7 pricing bracket.if they do and faster its a no brainer to get coffee lake over ryzen.especially for gaming.

Get the 1600 and oc it, at 1440p there will be no difference between it and the £100+ more expensive coffee lake hex core which will be using crap paste between the die and HS so expect high temps. Ryzen is soldered so runs cool.

No it isn't, otherwise everyone would just use the best price/performance rated items in all walks of life.

Tell me how much was you house? Why didn't you buy one at double the price?
Why don't you own a bugatti instead of whatever you drive now?
Of course it comes down to price.

You've just proven my point with your own post, if you think everyone lives within their means you're sadly mistaken and when we're talking about stuff that costs a few hundred not hundreds of thousands/millions plenty of people are willing to spend above whatever the best price/performance part is.

So now you're moving the goal posts to top dollar? No we're talking around £100 more.

On your house and car analogy why didn't you just buy the cheapest house that's liveable then or buy the cheapest car that gets you from A to B? It's pretty damn obvious everything isn't about the price, of course it's a factor but it's a long shot to call it the only one.

The 12 thread CoffeeLake will be getting on for £400, the 6 thread one will be £250 or more
If you're overclocking you will need a Z370 board, the cheapest current Z270 boards are £130 so don't expect Z370 boards to be any less than that.

So you're looking at £380 for the board and CPU if going Intel.

Current Ryzen the 1600 is £190 with good B350 board at's £100, so £290 vs £380 with no guarantee they are any faster.
