The new Intel architecture is due soon. It's called Core i7, will be 45nm and will feature two "standard" CPUs and one "Extreme Edition" at launch.
All will be quad core, on the new LGA1366 socket, and will support DDR3. They will also sport a new triple-channel memory controller, which you will need 3 sticks of RAM to take full advantage of.
From reading around, it seems the revisions help things like virtualisation more than gaming, however it should still give a good boost in all areas.
They're due around October or just after, probably launching with a new Intel X58 chipset to drive them. Obviously, due to the new socket, at least a new motherboard will be required.
As for AMD, it's quite quiet on their front. There's talk of shrinking Phenom but as to what advantages this will give apart from reduced heat and power, it's unclear. There have been numerous reports of a Phenom FX range due soon though, which may or may not be impressive.
Sadly there are little details on the AMD front overall. Phenom FX is expected soon though, there are numerous screenshots of engineering sample chips doing the rounds.
