Im in need of a new desk. I know exactly what I want but no idea what's it's called. Tried trawling through the forums but can't remember where I saw it.

It's the ikea units with a wooden top several people use. I can't remember the name of the units though or where everyone gets the top from. Any help fellas?

how much did you end up paying then? £45?

I need something a little shorter, only got a 1720mm i can work with although I could just cut it down.

Sweet, this is what I was thinking for my office but I couldn't remember what people used. Looks quite good with that kitchen worktop.

I just bought the Linnmon Table Top (Oak), with some White legs. Then got a Shelf top in the same Oak to put on top for my monitor to sit on. I think it all came to under £50 and it looks great!

Was really surprised by Ikea - Hadn't been to one in ages, but they have lots of cheap, good looking bits of furniture :D

Also got an Office chair - think it's called Malcolm or something like that (I didn't name it, Ikea did :p).

Yep £45. The KARLBY line are designed to be cut down. They come with edging strips so that you can tidy it up once cut to size. :)

Edit~~

Actually I paid less than £45. Sign up to become an 'Ikea Family' member in store and they give you a temporary member number.

This gives you an additional 10% off of sale items!

Spend the extra on an oak worktop, it's hugely better than some the Ikea chipboard.

Here's mine with the Ikea Alex drawers and some Ikea legs:

gonna go down to ikea tomorrow i think and see if i can pick up some alex draws.

If the karlby top is half price atm might just get one, for £45 it'll be worth it. Might not be solid walnut but cant complain at that money. My biggest worry is i dont think 650mm will be deep enough

Yeh I personally don't like 650mm (standard worktop size ). It depends how you sit at your desk, I chose 740mm depth x 2m wide as it was on sale and always thought I could cut it to size if needed, but if you have the room and now I have 2x 27" monitors and a hidden floating shelf behind to keep crap on. its perfect. if you have the room that is. here is my desk, need to do a updated photo, still love it to this day, awlays changing it:cool:

Those units are much higher than I thought they'd be, in a good way. From the pictures on the website they didn't look that big.

Definitely get a worktop. Way more top for your money.

I used a cheap veneer worktop to test a design but i'll be upgrading to an oak or beech top asap.

That is exactly what I want. Do you really need the legs at the back for support??

no, I wanted to support the the 2 alex units, but they hold more than fine. it is just layered on, no screws, and is sturdy and rigid. I ended up using the legs for a garage workshop, only if you have loads of weight at the back of the desk will you need them.

edit: although I got the reinforcement stands as they were literally a few quid, so why not if you misplace weight somewhere (my amp for example). so pick a few up they are very useful.

Got down to ikea last night. First time I'd ever been to one.

I love looking at furniture/home gear so had a whale of a time. Although Ikea meatballs are very overrated.

Ended up picking up one alex drawer unit and one of the little cupboard unit ones. The work top to go with it is the walnut saljan one. Was a steal at £22.50 in the end after the ikea family discount. :D

I'll get some photos up for you's when I eventually get it all set up :)
