Right, someone along the line here is being daft. But I cant figure this one out.

Gave the boss my old BB (BB 9780) He was currently using an old curve device with a work SIM which is BES enabled. He has been happily using BES on this for ages. No issues.

Factory wiped the 9780. Inserted the work sim. Starts up fine. Can make and recieve calls, can browse the web. GPRS is in uppercase.

Go to Enterprise activation, I enter the email address and enter the new activation password given by IT. Then all it proceeds to do is say 'Contacting Server' for about 10 minutes, then errors out.

The email account IS processing the .DAT file and there are no mail rules setup.

IT Support have removed the account from BES, left it for 4 hours, then re-added it but this has made NO difference.

Im stumped.

Am I right in saying the device pin no longer needs to be manually added to BES? Im sure years ago thats what you had to do....

Yes, after about 10 minutes I recieve a message saying the server has failed to respond to the request, and to either cancel or retry.

No need in recent versions of BES to manually add the device PIN. Can you see the Blackberry Admin page yourself? If so, best thing to do is remotely wipe the device (use the wipe and disable option), then delete the user from BES. Confirm after wipe that no device PIN is present next to the user, then delete them from the users list.

Wait a little while, then re-add the user and ensure their mailbox state is "Initialising". Specify an activation password, then run Enterprise Activation from the handset. Should be hunky dory after that.

Check spam filters on his mail account. Spamtitan has a habit of intercepting the activation emails from some of our users until we whitelisted the BB activation addresses.

Get exactly the symptoms you have.

Is the Blackberry flag in the top right hand corner? If not then I'd suggest contact your phone company as we had an issue with one which they said was all setup and fine (was previously working for months) and then, for some bizarre reason, they had changed the profile. They asked us to reset it and low and behold the flag came back and all was well.

Also if you're using BES Express you can't do 'Over the Air' activation and have to connect it to setup.

I think blackberry network packages are tied to the IMIE number and not just the sim so a change of handset would require a call to your network.

Could try doing a proper wood using JMcmd (think that's what they're called, I've not been a BES admin for over a year).

Assuming it is getting a data signal (GPRS/EDGE/3G, all caps), then check with the provider that the SIM#/telno is enabled for BES data & is on a data plan.

For the provider it could be as simple as a drop-down selection, check a tickbox, then save.
