New discs already warped!

Hi all,

I fitted new discs and pads to my Mondeo Mk2 V6 on all 4 corners almost 4 weeks back.

I've done about 3500 miles over the past month and almost all on the motorway.

I am really disappointed to report that I believe these replacement discs have already warped.
The previous discs were also warped too. These were on the car and in already warped when I bought it.

I'm pretty sure it's the discs and not some other issue as after replacing them the car braked very smoothly.

The car has not been driven hard. I am fairly sure I do not have a sticking caliper but cannot be 100%. I have not noticed any uneven braking, are there any other definitive tests?

Is it possible I bought crap or defective discs. Do you think it's worth speaking with the supplier?

Another thing, I seem to recall reading that the Mk2 Mondeo V6 is prone to warping discs? Is this a reality and if so, why?

Worth noting that my wishbone bushes are likely worn, could this infact be the problem and the discs fine?

Thanks guys.

Go for a long drive, after this drive place the palm of your hand on a wheel. If you are unable to remove your hand and suffer 3rd degree burns, then you have a binding caliper. This is close to how I found out :D

Best he pokes his dick through the spokes to save removing the wheel if you ask me :D

I take it these were 3rd party discs rather than genuine ford stuff?

Sometimes it pays to spend that little bit more :(

Sod paying Ford the prices they want for pads and discs, even with trade discount. I've always used Pagid stuff from ECP and never had an issue.

I did just buy cheap discs, I thought I posted on here for advice regarding that but cannot find my post.

You changed the pads? I ask because warped discs don't really exist and it will be pad material on the disc that causes the runout.

edit - silly me I see you did, maybe they are just crap and fall apart/desposit all their material on the discs.

*Didn't

I hope...

What make are they?

I drove back from Birmingham with a *slightly* stuck caliper, blued the disc off a treat and the pads crumbled to dust but the discs were still straight as a die. It's something I've never come across.

I'd happily bet large amounts of money that the actual discs are not warped...

It sounds like you have uneven deposits on the discs from the brake pads, suggesting that you didn't follow the bed in procedure correctly.

I bought mintex pads and cannot recall the disc brand. Will dig out the receipt. The discs were £30 + Vat for the pair.

What's the correct bed in procedure?

This happened to me when I changed the disks and pads on the Honda with some very cheap ones. I never hold my foot on the footbrake after braking down to a stop or anything, so couldn't really explain why it happened. I just put it down to them being cheap and crap and bought some branded pads and disks. Problem solved, still fine.

Are they 'special' pads ?

At huge expense I replaced the front discs and pads on my old s2000. Ds2500 ferrodo pads and dba 4000 slotted and vented discs.

Within 4000 miles the pads had fallen apart and the discs were ruined covered with loads of pad material deposits

It was believed the pads were somehow incompatible with the discs but considering they were a popular combo this was ruled out ...

I would try 5-6 high speed stops in quick succession and then let the discs cool. This can sometimes 'clear' the discs.

This.
All too often discs are binned due to being "warped" when its a high spot of pad material built up on the disc.
I've read a great article on the net somewhere about this but can't find it atm.

Sometimes just using the car can eventually wear off the high spot.
Unless of course the drive flange is damaged from the fitting of a wheel bearing (another common Mondeo fault), people hit the edge of the flange with a hammer to remove it and often burr the edge over causing a high spot and the disc doesn't sit flat.

This does cause the same symtom as "warped discs" and I'd bet on it not helping. Failing that it will be pad deposits.
