Here and There...
My trusty £100 hotpoint dishwasher packed up on Friday morning after 7 years of great service so it looks like time for a replacement I've done a bit of googling and review reading and I'm leaning towards the Beko DW686 it seems to have a great capacity and energy efficiency rating combined with some solid reviews and a good price?

Anyone got any experience with this model or recomend something similar in the price range (approx £300) yes I know it's a beko so no need for burning the house down comments, please don't just say meile becuase we are on ocuk and everyone should have meile.

The Bosch ones at this price point are rubbish (polynox bases etc). I'd look at the Samsung ones DW-FN320 (or look at the Blomberg GSN9122's , basically the same as the Beko but with 3 year warranty)

Don't know much about makes but if we bought another it would have a 3rd slide out tray for cutlery rather than the spiky hedgehog of death with the kids

I'd totally agree but they are out of op's budget. Something like the Bosch SMS58T02 (about £440 but a full stainless steel interior and the third cutlery tray at the top) :)

You can get a £1 trial membership to Which? that'll have dishwasher recommendations. I've just got one as I'm researching kitchen appliances at the moment (dishwasher, fridge, freezer, oven & hob).

I'd love some more Miele appliances (already have vacuum, washing machine & fridge/freezer), but my budget doesn't stretch that far at the moment.

At the moment we're in the process of designing a kitchen with Howdens and they have their own line of goods, which I believe may be re-badged Beko and have 2 year warranties.

The only inbuilt item I'd get from Howdens is the fridge freezer because it will fit perfectly with their cabinets the rest is overpriced with massive margins

I would ignore Which recommendations, they rate Hotpoint and Indesit machines as some of the best, the bizarrely rate the two brands differently from each other which is strange as they are exactly the same machine.

The Lamona stuff is Beko, it isn't bad kit, easily repairable and the spares are cheap too.

The Bosch non steel base dishwashers are ok, the mechanics are the same as the more expensive machines.

The Blomberg stuff is Fagor I think, not the best kit in the world, they make certain other products for some quite big brands.

The OP could do worse than buy the Bosch to be honest.

Any integrated fridge freezer will fit unless you are telling me their units are not 60cm wide!

The Howdens Lamona fridge freezers are also normally Beko products.

Blomberg is Beko :)

And the non steel base dishwashers are ok but you miss out on a lot of features , like the easy to move top basket , movable cutlery basket in the bottom rack and basically no fold down prongs , I just feel at this price I'd look elsewhere rather than a BSH group product

The Bosch SMS40C12GB has had some good reviews, had a look at one in John Lewis on Saturday.
Been thinking about buying a dishwasher for some time now, as I now moved washing machine from the kitchen to elsewhere there a vacant space now.

Bosch looked pretty good for the base 'Classixx' model, price & features 1-24 hour delay, 12 place setting, etc, covered most of what I needed.

Not sure that's true, arch. Our Bosh has all that and was about £350.

This one looks to be the same spec and is available for £300. States it has 'VarioFlex baskets which seem to be exactly what you discribe. http://www.appliancesonline.co.uk/product/SMS40T42UK-Bosch-Standard-Dishwasher-White-26477.aspx

If it is the same as mine then it's great. Quiet, efficient, can be set to delay start (useful if you have Eco7 electricity).

What's with the 'spiky hedgehog of death'? The cutlery in my basket is never dangerous - knife blades always point down and the handle of the basket is taller than any fork prongs.

Rackmatic is the easy height adjustment :)
Varioflex is the fold down prongs which is more useful IMO in the top , who uses 12 teaplates? I basically fill mine with tea mugs so having flat surfaces at the top is more useful

That's a good point, my bottom rack folds but the prongs in the top one don't. But then again the top of mine gets filled with children's bowls and other small stuff, and not that many tea mugs.

Thanks all some interesting point allthough it's looking like I may have fixed the old one!

I noticed it still powered on with the door open and only turned off when the door was about a quater of the way up so I guessed that it was the wires round the hings that were being pinched and had worn through. Quick bit of dismantling later and low and behold bare wires where the insulation had been worn off and the live cable worn through and only touching at certain angles. I've cut out and replaced the worn bits and currently have a test cycle running, fingers crossed!

Failing that I'm leaning more and more towards the beko it has the best energy rating of anything I've seen sub 400 quid and the internal flexibility looks good. I've no idea what the problem with the hedgehog of doom is life is full of things that are much more likely to kill your kids like crossing the road or driving to the grand parents!

In width yes but the split 50/50 40/60 etc is different manufacturer to manufaturer, I bought all Baumatic stuff for my kitchen and the fridge / freezer was a pain to fit to a Howdens 50/50 split f/f, took friggin hours to get it right.
