hey guys, got new 500gb wd sata drive for my brother and it arrived today. He always thinks i cause BSODs on his machine but i said installing HD isn't any problems. Install the HD, plug in all the cables etc etc and boot up. Comes to the windows xp start up screen. Freezes then BSOD. Try to enter in safe mode - loads drivers then restarts. What the heck is going on???? Really need some help with this please.

What board is it connected to?

It sounds like it could be a speed negotiation issue with an older board. You may need to set the SATA1 limit jumper on the drive.

yep it is an older board. its a gigabyte one. Is the jumper set to sata-2 speeds as default?

From what I've read on here they come without a jumper so, yes, set to SATA2 by default. Normally this isn't a problem but some older boards don't support speed negotiation and you get problems like this.

sorry for sounding stupid but are jumpers a physical plug that you insert or is it just a switch? I checked through the BIOS but I couldn't find anything that was relevant. Appreciate your help

A jumper is a pair of small pins on the physical hardware, the function they control is switched on or off by putting a small plastic encased connection known as a jumper cap.

There should be a note on the label of the drive of which pins to connect to limit the drive to SATA1.

cheers, i just found a wd leaflet which says pins 5/6. Will nip down to the local pc store and see if they have some. Are they generic i.e will any jumper fit any disk?

rang the local guy and he said that the only ones he has are for motherboards and are bigger than disk ones. Anyone know where I can pick up one to suit this disk?
