I'm looking at upgrading my old 250gb drive that I mainly use for music & games to something a bit bigger & better. Can you guys recommend a decent 2TB drive or would I be best off going for a 1TB for gaming?

I was looking at the Seagate Barracuda 2TB but not sure how reliable & quite they are.

2tb are fine for gaming I have a few myself

seagates tend to be noisy, but are decent,wd green are ok also

they are fine,my Samsung is 5400rpm I don't struggle in games

on a blank hdd I get 130mb read/write,the newer wd drives will be faster, nearly full I get 85mb/read/120write

I think the seagates are around 160mb read/write but remember they slow down as they fill up but not by much

I too would go for Western Digital, as mentioned previously Seagate have a higher failure rate.

I would probably go for a 7200rpm drive if it were me and I was using it for gaming. If you were using it for just storage then the slower WD Red drives would be the perfect choice.

The new Western Digital Black drives are very good and come with a 5 year warranty.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Western Digital Caviar Black 4TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD4003FZEX) HDD £179.99
1 x Western Digital Caviar Black 3TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD3003FZEX) HDD £149.99
1 x Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD2003FZEX) HDD £109.99
1 x Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD1003FZEX) HDD £79.99
Total : £529.56 (includes shipping : £8.00).

If it were me I would go for Western Digital for speed, warranty and reliability.

The Toshiba only comes with a 1 year warranty so if it breaks you after a year you will be out of pocket.

By default the Green goes to sleep all the time, PIA.

Look in thread made other day I and I think wazza added to, WD Red or Green.

There is a WD App to stop that but I am not sure if it works still as will not on Ext My Books (Greens inside), I use a App called NoSleepHD 2.0.

I personally would never buy a Green internal HDD, speed it about 120-130MB/s for new 4TB (the older 3TB is not a WD drive but Hitachi as they bought them)

You could save some £ of you went the green drive,Google their read/write speeds

Exactly, as I said in the other thread I don't know why anyone keeps recommending Green drives the reds are £10 more and have an extra year on the warranty and don't switch off every 5 minutes!

I'm only going off my Samsung f4 drives which are 5400rpm,sadly they don't make em anymore,if its only £10 more then get the faster drive but I don't suffer in games and the spin up/down can be disabled in windows

What spec is the rest of your PC?
Have you considered an SSD? Best upgrade you can possibly do to your PC.

There was a large study done on hard drives in late 2013 and Toshiba were the worst followed by Seagate.

I would avoid both of these if it were me.

OK, think im going to order a 1tb WD drive then. So when it turns up will I need to uninstall all games I have on the drive its going to replace or should I be able to run them both, copy the files over then change the drive letters over so its the same as the old one (hope that makes sense)
