Just wondering if OcUK are going to be getting any of the rev2 Drobo's in ? I've noticed that the original one has disapeered from the website, so hopefully thats a good sign.

I'd like to look at changing my storage from a standalone windows machine to a NAS box, which will free up some much needed space.

"Drobo Share" still uses USB 2.0. Until/if they upgrade the drobo share to Fwire 800 as well this is not a viable NAS solution.

Otherwise a perfrect backup/external disk solution.

Huh? Unless it actually connects to a network, its not a NAS at all . . . .

Or am I missing something Blindingly obvious here? (Please note: Ive just gotten back from a 12 hour nightshift and am slightly tired . . . )

Drobo connects to a module thing via USB 2.0 that then lets you connect the drive to the network.

We will be getting the new model by the way.:)

Why isn't it a viable NAS ? Yes it won't get gigabit speeds, but it will still work as a NAS quite well.

Whoop! Just what I wanted to hear thanks.

So basically it's just a multiple bay HD enclosure?

Essecentially yes. But it also lets you dynamically add and change disks, plus you can use disks or different sizes and the software creates the biggest array that it can.

So its a bit more advanced than a standard HDD enclosure, whilst also being easier to maintain.

Not cheap though (£300 one) £144 isn't too bad for the other one. Personally would just have 4 HD inside the case. Then for a NAS, buy a NAS or use a file server.

I've got 6 drives in the case atm (2 for OS 4 for data), but I'm converting the machine into a media center machine. The data drives have got all the films* on, but also I use it as a safe place to store the contents of a few user account's documents folders. I've tried having it run over the wireless connection, but the response when accessing iTunes (itunes library is also centrally stored) is really slow, so I'd rather have a dedicated NAS box.

The drobo is the slickist small NAS I've seen, so I think its worth the extra money for the ease of use.

*All home movies of course ;)
