New employer needs bank statements of last 8 months - how to send safely?

Evening all,

So I'm starting a new job after having been out of work for a while.

To prove I have not been working my new employer has asked that I provide bank statements that cover this period. I can provide a print screen from my bank's online banking portal, but I'm not comfortable sending this from my personal email as it is not secure.

What would people do in this situation? The HR department is in another city from where I will be working so I cannot deliver by hand - would posting this be the safest way to go?

tell them to sod off tbh, they want proof of you being unemployed tell them to contact the jobcentre, its what i did for security stuff. no need what so ever for them to need bank statements.

I worked for the CRB for a awhile, even they did not want bank statements.

Its a bloody strange request that's for sure.

Are you UK born? Because it sounds like a immigration thing to me. I been out the loop for awhile, but to ask for a bank statement for a job prospect is very out of the ordinary?

Just asking...

Ignore all the usual tinfoil hat brigade and those here who are outraged on your behalf. Ask yourself how much you jeed/want the job and then take a call whether to send them statements or not. A PDF over email is going to be fine chances of your details being stolen between your email client and theirs is negligible. All this talk.of encrypted rare files with your data blanked out is total nonsense.

People get so up in arms about trivial things on here...

And the balance of all accounts, the value of the significant assets (home/car), outgoings broken down into all sorts, income broken down into all sorts, etc. But obviously they don't just take your word for it :p.

Erme.. Nope..They may well look into that based on what you tell them but it's not asked for.

I have the DV form.

I'm DV too.. And you're right, they ask for a LOT in that interview but like you say they ask for it, you give them it and they had it all way before you gave them it. They ask for it to see if you're honest, like when they ask if you've ever downloaded illegal movies etc it's all part of the script.

For a standard job, I would NOT expect to prove I 'didn't have a job' by my bank statements.

Can you at least understand the prospective employer wanting evidence the OP has been jobless for eight months/wasn't just sacked from a different job which covered that period? I'd probably want to see something from the Job Centre, tbh, if someone was claiming they'd been sitting unemployed for eight months (depending on circumstances - eg. if they had a great job, lost it and were sitting on a nice redundancy package/didn't want to get any old job)... or if they claimed to be travelling but weren't convincing on that during their interview. I don't know what any of those circumstances are/what this job is, but I can certainly understand where the prospective employer might be coming from, depending on what the particular circumstances are here.

I 100% totally get that. But if they left a job 8 month ago, that employer can give a reference up to then, as can previous employers so hopefully paint him a good picture. When it comes to 'proving' his gap I just don't think it's fair for him to have to show his bank statement. It's his private life, what if his statement is:

TV Licence
Porn Website Subscription
Sex shop purchase
Sex shop purchase
Phone bill
Gay Magazine subscription (Nothing against gay's here, but an example of something that could if he was gay and not 'out' as such could cause issues, potentially bullying).

You get the picture, things on there are private. I'd possibly show them a list of 'incoming payments' with no references. If anything 'large' was an In payment, leave that visible to show the reference is not an employer. But, the above could be embarrassing and to me is an invasion of his private life. If he was, like me and you having a job which was DV cleared etc and we were going through that I wouldn't hesitate to provide.

An easier option though, like you've said is assuming he claimed jobseekers then take his little book with him and that is proof.

Sex shop orders just say some bland cover company like "for gate trading ltd" not "zomg this guy actually has a Sex life"

Ta for the input all.

Yes it's for a financial institution and they just want to make sure I haven't worked in the meantime. I took some time out due to health reasons.

It is more detail than I would usually feel comfortable disclosing, but I've not got anything to hide and due to the fact I've been at home all this time there's not a lot to see anyway in terms of my financial activity. I can understand from their point of view that they might be worried about an employment gap.

I have good references from my previous job and will be working with people who I have worked with before who can vouch for me, but I guess it's just company policy.

Decided to post a hard copy (printed from online banking) in the end, at least that's no more risky than how the bank sends them to me.

Having worked in FS for 13 years, mainly in roles that involve a much higher level of screening than most roles, and having been through a recruitment process 6 times for 5 different organisations, including 3 of the largest FS companies in the country (Two of which have been in the last 12 months) I have NEVER been asked to provide bank statements. So it is safe to say it is far from "normal" procedure.

I guess your situation is due to the lack of ability to reference the period of time you were not working. Regardless of why, there really is no need to worry about sending a bank statement to a bank :)

Well you could be hiding getting fired I suppose.

Or:

Moonlighting in a Thai massage parlour?
Annual subscriptions to The New Statesman/The New Worker etc?
Paid your £3 to join the Labour Party and an annual subscription to BNP?
Purchased a single ticket to Damascus?
Bought "Teach yourself Farsi/Chechen/Arabic" on ebay?
Purchased a photo of David Cameron in a compromising position with Miss Piggy?

I would tell them you will provide your bank statements if they provide theirs.

I would then reply to them refusing to provide these details with a whopping good bye then.

I agree - having been in financial services for 18 years (15 as a registered individual) I've NEVER been asked for bank statements in any job/recruitment process. Credit search every year - yes, bank statements - no.

I once got short listed as one of the last two candidates for a non-financial job in a non-financial business sector.

They credit checked us and I didn't get it because I had a lower credit score.

Still baffles me to this day.

I've been required to show original bank statements before, but that was to prove that I lived at the address at which I said I lived.
