So whats the difference between this and an mx5  they look the same but the assistant head at my old school had a dark blue 'eunos' with no mazda badges.
Eunos is a Jap import. It's what MX-5's are called in Japan.

(Could be an American import but the Jap's are RHD so more than likely if you see a Eunos it's a Jap MX-5)

i thought it was a miata in the states?

Hi, Why does power feel so low? These things should shift quite nicely pulling thru all gears at any revs strongly. Looks like you have a lot of work to do but should be a fun project.

Ah i see. Is there any reason to go for the eunos(import) over the Mx5 as i imagine with it being an import insurance companies bend you over for it?

The imports seem to be better kitted out (power steering, electric windows, aircon (just why?!)) than UK MX5s.

Well in my experience it feels like it's not putting out the right amount of power. The engine feels like it doesn't like being revved too hard. Some engines seem to like being driven hard and lap it up. This one seems like you're abusing it. I've had a 1.9 205 GTI which only made 120bhp and it was night and day with this car.

Once I get the air filter and cold air going to it I'll try again, but if it still doesn't feel 'right' I'll have her on the rolling road to find out what's what! Maybe the timing is a little retarded.

because usually although not in this case the Jap ones have nice leather seats and other fancy options most of the UK cars don't have unless they are special editions. Jap cars are often low mileage which is why people flock to them although I would personally be wary as it's pretty easy to clock a car with a Japanese service history, must be very tempting for the dealer when the put the new clocks on... The Eunos generally has a lower value than the equiv UK models however, some of the top Vspec etc special edition Eunos go for good money. Personally if you can afford it I would also go for a Mk1 UK special edition as they hold their value very well and have a high level of trim.

Something might be amiss then! With my 1.8 it feels quite sluggish until you get the revs up, but once there it seems to go really well and pulls strongly up to the redline. It has quite a reputation for being a very rev-happy engine as well.

Cheers mate,im not intending to buy one and i cant even drive yet. I was just wondering because the fact it was a mazda mx5 in my eyes but badged up eunos and the guy was in his 50s so not very likely to mod it.

Think me and a mate argued over what it was when we were at school, just like him trying to say diesels had spark plugs.

It looks like someone has modified the hell out of it so they may well have messed about with the timing. It defo is the 1.8 then? I know they did exist in Japan but understood that the 1.6 in 115bhp form was more popular over there. Something is defo wrong if the car feels slow and is not eager to zip thru the revs and gears. They should pull very strongly up to the redline without complaint. Today when I driving mine like a retard I pulled off in 2nd several times and only noticed when I moved to change gear! :o Not been the sharpest tool in the box today.... My point is tho it took off like a normal car would in first.

edit a popular mod is to advance the timing to improve performance a bit. It is possible the previous owner has seriously bodged his attempt up!!!

Well it would certainly make sense. I'll spend some time getting the timing spot on and sourcing a good exhaust system. It strikes me as a bit odd that someone has spent a lot of money on the car at one point - ARC Intake, Good anti roll bars and uprated suspension but the timing is out? Ah well, if it was easy it'd be no fun :D

Nice purchase, im working my way of getting myself back in one of these after I totaled my last one, and made the silly mistake of going for power over fun to try something different.

Iv never seen proof of an air filter in an MX5 doing anything other than reducing power, although they make a nice noise ;)
