New Facebook trend

Isn't it friends only by default though?

So surely you need some new friends if they're going to nick all your stuff when you're out ;)

That's true but a lot of people add random people or a friend's friend's friend's who they just met briefly.

Suppose this is like Google Latitude... Not sure a lot of people will be keen on this :D

A lot of people used the 'foursquare' app prior to this, but it was just people checking into half interesting places.
The activation of places now means more silly people are checking in at home. Silly people!

It will only put where you are if you tell it to. You need to 'check in'.
Don't want to check in? Don't. Simples :)

Exactly...i gave it a go last night on my iphone and it works but i just unchecked myself, i dont want my friends or family knowing where i am all the time. Plus google latitude is more or less the same thing isnt it??...you can track where your friends are if you wish.

Is there anyway to disable the updates without blocking specific people entirely? I don't want the updates but hitting the cross just gives option to block the person or report spam. I want to block the Places updates like I would block any other annoying application.

Tried it once but really don't see the point of this tbh.

I can see how it might have it's uses, for example checking in to a pub on a night out, mates also out may swing by to say hi if they notice, that sort of thing.

Sadly, as usual, what could be a good idea is largely ruined by the stupidity of the public at large and so it's now just constant spam of 'I am at work' ' I am at home' 'I am at McDonalds' 'I am at a bus stop' 'I am where I was 5 minutes ago'

Does anyone know how to hide this pathetic rubbish? Not hide the person that uses it just the Places updates so that their normal updates still appear

Not fussed if not, just thought i'd ask I think its a bit too much

Mmm.. Facebook places, what's that? Is this to compete against Twitter?

I think it's largely supposed to rival Foursquare.
http://foursquare.com/

If you aren't aware already, Foursquare is an app for phones that allows you to check-in at places that you go to. You get points and achievement badges and can become a major or places if you check-in enough. This is mostly pointless, however it's main benefit is it allows you to leave 'tips' on places, so you can quickly look at tips on places around you which can be useful.

Also, some places offer you a special offer for checking-in. Such as Dominos have an offer. Also, a bike shop near me will give you a free bike inner tube if you checkin and then show them. A humous restaurant I know will let you have a free meal if you become major.

A few of my friends were using Facebook places last night to show which pub they were at, so I can see how it has it's uses. However, obviously you've got to be careful who is on your Facebook.

Its shocking, the amount of information on your life it shows. Not only from a personal safety point of view (stalkers, people with grudges etc) but from a property security POV as well.
I can understand it if you have 50 close friends / family on your profile and the privacy settings all on maximum, but these people with their profiles wide open to the public and 1000's of friends are just leaving themselves open to problems
