After a new family car, probably an SUV but also been looking at a Civic.

Does anyone have any views on good family SUVs. Wife wants to buy brand new and looking at a budget of 40k-45k max.

Am I mad for considering a Civic?

If you genuinely need an SUV, then yes, you'd be mad to consider a Civic.

If a Civic would adequately suit your needs, then OcUK Motors will be able to suggest 1001 cars they think you should buy instead of an SUV :p

We are not fussed on shape of car, boot space is main concern and seems roughly similar on the SUVs we have looked at compared to Civic, for example a ZR-V and Civic have roughly same boot capacity with back seats up, unless I have missed something. Sportage seems a fair bit bigger though.

Wife wants an SUV though so trying to find a decent one, I like the new Civic which is why I am trying to justify it in my head.

Most SUVs are deceptively un-spacious, like a reverse TARDIS; big on the outside, small on the inside. Not sure about the newer civics, I had a MK8 and the boot was huge. SUVs can be handy for putting kids in because they're higher up, but other than that, I don't understand why they're so popular :( Give me a decent sized estate over one any day

If the civic fits your family needs and you like them more than the SUVs, then you should just buy a civic. Maybe worth having a look at Toyota Corolla hybrid estate too, for similar money to the civic.

For family duty, comparing a civic to an SUV seems illogical.

I’d consider X3/Q5 sized SUV proper family sized, I.e. 550L of boot space and upwards.
SUVs have the ‘appeal’ of much easier ingress/egress with kids/babies, generally more interior space / practicality and a more relaxed driving experience.

The compromise is an estate, more luggage room but still lower/less practical/less interior roominess overall.. but will feel more like a car if that’s what you are after.

Smaller SUVs will only offer marginal boot space but will offer the other aspects, so really, just go and look at some and see what you think..

When we got a practical SUV with our two young kids, we never looked back…

Could get a nice 2nd hand EV, plenty of year old SUV sized for well under £40k and will have cheaper running costs, albeit you will be looking at things with 250-400bhp..

Our main runabout has been a Civic since we've had kids. We had a Civic MK8, nothing was comparable in luggage space. Having the fuel tank under front seats meant the rear seats could fold flat, or up out the way, or you could store things underneath them (think plane seats). It even had a huge space under the main boot floor to put even more stuff!
We'd still be using that Civic if it hadn't been written off last year, but it was - and we replaced it with.. another Civic. A MK10, which is slightly bigger overall, and the boot is slightly smaller but it's still huge. I think the only thing bigger is an Octavia. I think the current MK11 Civic is very similar. They're all hybrids now, which whilst I've not driven a Civic with that powertrain, I did have a Jazz with the same system and it was certainly nippy off the line - it just runs out of top end, but then who needs top end over 115mph in the UK anyway.
I'd say you're not mad for considering a Civic, but bonkers for going new - unless there's tax reasons / salary sacrifice / lease through work.
