BT Retail Prices New Super

BT Retail, part of the BT Group PLC (BT) Thursday revealed the pricing for its new super>fast broadband service, BT Infinity.

MAIN FACTS:

-The new consumer service uses fiber optic technology to offer download speeds of up to 40Mb/s from GBP19.99 per month.

-Upstream speeds are up to 10Mb/s.

-BT is also launching a new super>fast broadband service to business which will be known as BT Business Total Broadband Fiber.

-From Jan. 25, new and existing BT Total Broadband and BT Business customers in an enabled exchange areas will automatically be eligible for the up to 40 Mb/s broadband service.

Just found it on BT's site. for £19.99 + £50.00 activation fee and you only get 20gb per month wich is pretty useless.

It's £24.99 for unlimited.

Available from the 25th Jan so i will be checking if i can get it.

Just 2 little words to cause so much annoyance... "up to".

Sure, this eliminates speed issues due to attenuation problems (at least from the road-side cabinets to the exchange) but I doubt that you will actually get that much improvement unless BT gives everyone higher IP profiles and more bandwidth over their virtual paths.

I would be very happy to just get close to the 7.5mbit that I can synch with the exchange, let alone 40....or 20.

1) How long will Fibre be BT only? Will they do an LLU-like thing to allow other providers to use the network?
2) Will I have to ditch my Cisco 877 if I got it? Can I upgrade to different Cisco router (2600?) and stick a fibre WIC in it?

As kkbigal alludes to this is BT's Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC) rollout. The exchange is connected to a box on your street by fibre but the last jump into your property is still copper wires and DSL.

I thought TalkTalk was involved with the trials.

At a guess this is being run by Openreach rather than BT in its ISP guise. They would rent virtual circuits between cabinet and exchange to BT, LLU or whoever. Then at the exchange these would be routed to the relevant ISP's equipment.

I 'think' you have to wait till the 25th to find out if you can get it.

What annoys me is they have the fiber optic broadband available at my work in Glasgow (in an industrial estate!) and the only company i guess would use it is the network company next door.

2800 series will be more suitable for the higher bandwidth applications, bit expensive for the home though.

I don't think this will be available in many places yet.

My town is due to get FTTC by March this year, fingers crossed.

I'd disregard what their website claims you'll get.

I've just tried it myself and been told that I'll get 9Mb.

I'm currently with Be* and I get 24.5Mb so I don't know where they're getting 9 from.

(I live right on the exchange, it's about 50m away from my front door )

None of these options will use fiber on the customer side of the demarc. You'd just need a router with an ethernet port.

That checker is useless, I had an 8mb line 4 years ago and it'sstill only saying 5.5 :S

The checker is saying I'm only capable of 3Mb, ouch. Good thing I'm with VM and am on 20Mb. Unless BT can offer 50Mb for cheaper than VM with less/no restrictions then I may consider it, and I don't mean 'up to 50Mb', I want what I pay for, like with VM.

Guys i dont think the checker is working yet i just tried the works number and it says 5mb and the fiber cable is less than a 100 meters away.

For anyone wondering about single-figure estimates, did you look at the name of the service it said was available? Chances are it was showing you ADSL Max speeds for BT Total Broadband, rather than this new BT Infinity service.

Pffft, I wish to god BT would do something about the broadband speeds where I live, the max speeds I can get just now is 2.5mb, and it's very rarely that I ever get these speeds, most of the time it's around 1.5mb...

I can only dream of 40mb speeds.
