New fiber optic BT broadband £19.00 per month

You can't be too far away from the exchange in such a town. Can you get ADSL2+ connections? Because I'd imagine that would be close to 20Mbps from most parts of Haverhill.

Yeah I'm on ADSL2+ at 16Mbps. Though a mate who lives near the Sainsburys on the outskirts of the town barely manages to get 4Mbit.

most of my town has lines that would be the same,only talk talk 24mb(dirt wouldnt touch it) right now but im told everywhere in n ireland will be done by 2011 for 40mb.for once we will have more fibre deployment that most of europe :O

about bloody time but bt need to get thier ass in gear as even 21cn is congested to crap right now, they have to go and replace most of the bandwidth in some places by x10 speed, i think its all 1gb links now? AAisp blog is great for all that info.ping also have sucked on it i hear, again fibre wont mean crap to me if it has bad routing and worse latency over the old network, you would think with 21cn being new they would take into account latency and try to reduce it over the old one.some routing is just plain retarded and takes you 200 miles north when you should really be going south ><

also bt are so dumb, why did no bright spark simply use the new type fibre and is made to go through existing sewers? rat proof and all ! no digging just feeding cables into premises for easily 100mb and probably 1000mb in the future, nope not bt they go fibre except for the last few yards? doesnt make sense to me its like running a marathon and stopping at the finnish line and not crossing it ><

ps whats the download time for say 10gb on 35mb?

BT are keeping the copper links to the premises as they can send power down it, and therefore your landline keeps working in a power cut. If they went fibre all the way then they would need a fairly large FIOS-style demarc, which people would no doubt complain about.

FTTC will all be about how close you are to the green cabinet.

Most houses are within 500 meters or so. VDSL2 works basically flat-out (100Mbit/s is possible) sub 100 meters. Then it starts tailing off.

Luckily for me, the green cabinet is literally within stone throwing distance :D

Rofflay - BT are currently increasing their SVLAN's, this is the service that carries broadband to many homes, some of these are getting big increases, up from 24mb to 40mb, other have been increased to 100mb, this is currently the most we can offer them.

I'm not sure how many customers are fed by these services.
 
All the cabinets around here are well within 60m yay... tho BT have no plans for FTTC :( I'd be quite happy tho personally with 20MBit down, 2MBit up let alone anything faster atm (getting half that up/down atm).

This means VHDSL from the cabinet to the premises. Under ideal conditions that's 100mbit duplex - max 300 metres. That degrades severely as distance increases. So 40mbit is pretty reasonable really.

As for capping uploads, bandwidth is expensive, can you imagine if all ISPs suddenly had to backhaul the same amount of data in uploads that they currently do in downloads?!
So we're still using crap copper pairs? Digital Britain my arse. VHDSL? Welcome to 2001!!!

Bandwidth is only expensive in the UK, it's about 5x cheaper in the US last time I checked...
I imagine what would happen is... The ISPs just start charging for the amount of bandwidth consumed + a profit margin! Rather than milking all the low-usage users and booting the users that don't fit into their profit models.

That was part of the point of 21CN. Obviously they'll have to increase the capacity, but the idea is that it's handed over at the exchange to whichever LLUer is taking the data. There's a PDF on the Openreach website - the LLUesque product is Generic Ethernet Access.

They have dedicated backhaul of some sort, whether rented from someone or run on their own.
 
BT/ADSL Tech = rubbish.

With that download cap across all tariffs you will have breached your monthly limit in 1 hour!

It's not even ready yet, yet its already behind what Virgin can offer.

Virgin meanwhile are trialling 200mb. Easy for them because its fibre optics all the way.

NO IT'S NOT!

It's fibre optics as far as the street cabinet and coax from there, almost exactly identical to BTs 40Mbit product only they use VDSL instead of coax.

And the mind numbingly annoying belief people have that it's fibre all the way is why virgin's stupid 'fibre broadband' ads should have been banned!

Its Digital Coaxial which is the same as Digital optical.
 
Does it make anyone else laugh that they're still restricting upload bandwidth?
They have a piece of fibre there which should do 1Gbit duplex, yet for no apparent reason they're capping it at 40/10. How lovely of them!

Do you know how much bandwidth costs? From a cheap rubbish provider like cogent it costs £1 per mbit per month. So if you want unlimited 1Gbit you're going to need to cough up a £1000 a month to cover that bill, plus the cost of their network, plus some profit - how do you fancy it?

It's made of metal, which is by the laws of physics of limited use for high bandwidth applications over distances more than about 100m. It's in no way similar to extruded glass fibres and lasers in principle or reality.

For common joe there is no difference in Coax or Optical because for this purpose they are as good as each other. Rolling out Optical to houses from the cabinets is a complete waste of money because it would have achieved the same result as Coax.

Audio Hi/Fi etc too use either Coax or Optical for Digital Sound because for the platform its good as each other.

Coax/Optical a lot better than copper wire.
 
"Digital coax" huh? Does "digital cable" exist? End of the day you're sending a analog sinewave over it and then looking for 0s and 1s, across a large number frequencies (in the case of broadband) concurrently.

ADSL is fine. It's no more or less hacky than DOCSIS (cable) is. In fact, it's probably less so. Because ADSL is point-to-point, whereas DOCSIS is, loosely, a broadcast medium in the same way a orbital satellite is.
