I'm currently running a P4 HT 3.2Ghz and 1 GB RAM, i thought i'd sign up for this folding as it seems like a good way to contribute to the world :) Two questions really, should i be running two FAH console? and i set my CPU to run at 80%, is that ok?

Thanks in advance :)

EDIT: I am running two copies and my CPU temp is 60 degrees C, think i should stop or just run the one?

Only run one console client, running two just means they both run at half speed and defeats the purpose.

EDIT. Welcome to the team :D

Welcome :D

I'd go for one client, 100% CPU :)

You do get slightly more points running two clients on an HT system, but Stanford discourage it as it slows down the scientific process, and it will also make your CPU run hotter.

As above really. I'd go with hyperthreading and two consoles, but what do I know :p 80% is fine, you've experimented with 100% I guess?

On the various borgs I have in the office, being P4 3.0GHzs, I have hyperthreading enabled, but set up only one instance of folding, using 100%. Thus if you look at the CPU usage it suggests only 50% of the power is used. That means whatever else happens the PC isn't going to hang on the users of the borgs so they really don't know about it.

As for temps, I don't have monitoring software being cheap and cheerful office PCs. Some of the CPU coolers are running quite noisily, but that might just reflect on build quality. Even so I'd be dubious on my borgs of running two folding instances simultaneously, even if I gained slightly in output.

I'd say 80% with two HT consoles will probably give you about the same points and CPU temperature as 100% with one. Both setups will give you a bit of CPU spare for other apps (the spare 20% in the first case, the HT core in the second.)

Given that I'd just run the one to get the WUs back more quickly and save hassle :)

Hi again, thanks for the advice :) I think i need to start again lol Last night i had two consoles running and my CPU temp went up to 79 degrees C  So i quickly turned it off and shut down my PC, however i think it could be a speedfan malfunction... or a heat spot on the CPU? i don't want speed fan to control my fans just to monitor, is there any way of doing that?

Many thanks

It shouldn't be unless you change the % fields on the control page bit.

My votes for two clients at 80% that what I do here.
that way if one client is down or hangs or can't get new work the other client takes over :D

Works great and cuts downtime (ram usage is only issue but with 1GB you never have a problem)

Yeh i changed the % being the inquisitive person i am, not i want to change it back lol atm i've uninstalled it and it seems to have gone beack to normal, but obviously now i cant monitor :( Are there any other programs?

There are quite a few, but SpeedFan is one of the easiest. If you're mobo supports MBM5 (the program stopped being updated ages ago, so it's only for older boards - though you can search about for config file for newer ones on google), that's a great program. Everest Home Edition (the one you don't have to pay for) is also good, though that's much more general.
