Firstly is anyone currently working on one? I had a feeling there was a new one in the works out there somewhere but I'm not sure if I just made that up :p

My thoughts are that more and more people who join are bringing dual/quad core systems and end up with multiple standard clients not really getting them anywhere - plus those that learn of the SMP then face a bit of a battle finding the relevant threads/links.

I suggest that for now we get together all the links we can find for helpful bits of info and chuck them in this thread and once we've got some kind of order together form a new sticky (unless someone is already making one in which case it'll be a handy reference till then).
The existing sticky can then be transferred to the archive where it can still be linked to and read for those who are only after standard clients or other information in there.

Thoughts?

Totally agree, new updated sticky needed.

I'll add my quick smp guide for stormduck here when I've writen it.
as I don't think there is a server install guide...

Any one in contact with SB? as his guide is way better than anything I could do, just it's now a little out of date :(

If somebody else wants to take charge and delegate tasks to others I'm absolutely willing to lend a hand as a delegate. I have access to machines of all types; uniprocessor Windows, x86 Mac, and Linux (and BSD), multiprocessor x86 Windows, Mac, and Linux (and BSD), uniprocessor and multiprocessor PowerPC Macs, and an ATi X1xxx GPU.

EDIT: I think that the SMP guides for each arch should be illustrated, but otherwise fairly bare-bones. It should then link to something like Sirius's more comprehensive guide. Brevity in the sticky is important IMO.

A link to SiriusB's SMP guide would be good. I 've read a few things about problems with Vista, setting up to run as a service because of access to the "hidden" administartor a/c, so although I'm still on XP it would be handy for the future. If not the the full instructions then an outline of the NotFred diskless vesrion & where to get it?
Re; dual/quad cores - how to run Win SMP + the standard client as well or just as multiple versions.

IMO all setup procedures documented in the sticky should be for native installs only. It should make mention on multiple occasions that installation in a VM is possible and beneficial, but I think that that is better covered in a medium dedicated more solely to that purpose, like Sirius's guide.

That makes sense, but most folders are not going to dump windows.
so the linux client will frequently be run within VM.

Lets get the info together and then decide on format / sub-sections.
80% is already in the current sticky, it just needs filtering and updating

I'm in contact with SB, and if he doesn't answer his emails I'll drive down to his house and poke him with a stick. I'm sure if someone does the donkey work he'll be more than happy to update the site.

PS - great idea with the new sticky, if there's anything tedious I can do to help let me know. I can mark up text in XHTML for example.

I agree with the change of stickies at the top - the emphasis should be on the WinSMP client as that is the easiest to setup for the amount of PPD that you recieve. All new processors are dual core so the standard client is getting a bit old.

I plan on doing a guide for the diskless setup this weekend, as I believe that it is the easiest way of setting up a Linux SMP client and is very lightweight. Unfortunately I think I'm the only person using it 24/7 around here which is a shame.

only one running diskless Linux SMP (the only two people that tried it afaik were theheyes and Cob, but they couldn't get it to save to the USB key).

I ran diskless on my MythTV box before installing to a compactflash card for quicker booting and greater reliability on my 100 mbit network.

It's not diskless if you're using a USB disk! Network booting only!

I tried it too but was also unable to save, so I went back to my Ubuntu Server VMs as the PPD was exactly the same.

Should there be separate instructions for 2k/XP and Vista? I am inclined to think there there should be since the Vista one should be specific about how to deal with privileges so much so that it might be a bit confusing to an XP user.

The instructions should focus on Ubuntu, far and away the most popular Linux distro on OcUK, but not neglect other distros, especially Red Hat-like distros. This really only comes into play when downloading the finstall script since some come with curl and others with wget.

I have only intermittent access to a Leopard machine as all of my Macs run Tiger. The setup procedure is the same for all but it would be nice to have some Leopard screenies. I could write the howto if somebody else would be willing to take the screenshots as directed.

There's an Arch guide here. It would be worth linking to, tho I agree that Ubuntu (particulary the Server version) should be the focus for linuxSMP.
