New folding sticky - thoughts?

Can anybody think of a reason not to use the finstall script with the Linux guide? I can't.

All guides should use the 6.0 beta client and mention the user ID key number or whatever it's called. that might even go in the first post since it applies to all installations.

I ran diskless on my MythTV box before installing to a compactflash card for quicker booting and greater reliability on my 100 mbit network.

It's not diskless if you're using a USB disk! Network booting only!

Well the guy who created it called it diskless :P He meant more for people that have dedicated machines to folding so they wouldn't have to use a gfx card/ hard drive in their machine.

Seems odd that I am the only one that appears to be able to get it saving to USB drive. Oh well, each to their own I suppose, I'm happy with using it :)

i agree it quite an important point

Finstall is a must.

Could maybe point it out at the end of the winSMP guide as everyone should really be running it.

tried and failed with Arch - stick with ubuntu for the sticky.

Nice to see this moveing on a pace, off to bed as I've a very busy few days ahead, will try and add my 2cents worth when I can

I don't run fah on my Leopard computer (laptop) but tomorrow I will follow the sticky instructions and see if they work.

edit - if I get time I might just write a walkthrough guide which can be "peer reviewed" and edited as appropriate. I'll also look into setting up Increase.

Ok, I've thought about it a bit. I don't have the time lately to do the whole thing myself since I'm preparing for a new job and a move, but if you guys would like I'd be happy to take charge of the project if others would volunteer and contribute. The only thing that I ask is that all contributions be released into the public domain so that others can take our work and use it to spread the Folding joy. :)

If somebody else wants to take charge that's A-ok too. I'd be happy to be a worker bee. :D

EDIT: If anybody wants to contribute please consider anything I wrote last time to be fair game for copying and modification. Use it as you see fit.

I think we need a section in there on the essentials of folding within a VM. Like it or not, most people using the linux SMP will be running it within VMWare.

It will only take a paragraph or two to describe setting up VMWare (Download & install it, select default options, changing virtual hard drive and memory size, setting the process to low priority, and setting up Samba).

I don't mind doing the Mac OS X guide since I have plenty of Macs lying around. The only thing I don't have is a Mac Pro so I won't be able to test running multiple clients.

I have a PS3 too if no one picks that up. It's probably the easiest to set up out of all the clients but I won't be able to get screenshots.

I agree, but it is needed in my opinion :)

I think the introductory paragraph could mention that those running Windows can run the Linux SMP client via VMWare and get a points boost over the winSMP client. And then it can be mentioned at the start of the native Linux method.

Yup :) I understand that most people are going to be using the WinSMP client, but for those that get bitten by the bug will want to see the easiest option for getting more points :)
