New game / New Graphics card.

My bill so far give or take a few pence is £309.24.

I still can't use the display card.

1. I have a display card that is still faulty.

2. I have a monitor that I did not need.

3. I have a power supply that I did not need.

£309.24......

Look on the bright side and make no mistake - a new PSU was needed for that 7950 as it did not provide anything near 750W as far as powering the GPU and CPU are concerned. More like 408W (my guess 22 + 12 amps max combined output), and it was 5 years old so with degradation common to all PSUs, more so budget ones, it was surely providing less by now. It also lacked a second PCI-E cable for the 7950. And now you have a far safer unit less likely to go boom due to the greater power requirement.

GPU may indeed have a fault that didn't come up during OcUK's testing (possible). Similar thing can happen with RAM and second-hand sales of the same. The seller may have the RAM working perfectly in their system, and then it fails to work/crashes on the buyer's system because their different system (or usage) is exposing a flaw that the previous system (or usage) did not. OcUK apologized for the team handling your case not doing more to help you and just returning the same card after it passed their tests. They offered you a great deal on your new PSU. And you have Bailey's offer of a new card on the table. Hopefully you'll have posted in Customer Service forum too, to make sure they are updated.

Now, until you try the new card to see, it also remains possible that the problem may lie somewhere else, despite the old GPU working fine on your rig. Motherboard maybe. It may not like/may be interfering with the 7950 in some way that does not affect the old GPU. Apart from the PSU's GPU power connectors, the motherboard also provides a bit of power to the GPU through the PCI-E slot. It may not be providing all that the more powerful 7950 needs, or may not be stable enough. Testing with the replacement card first will determine this, one way or another.

I don't know if you have flashed the BIOS of the motherboard to latest version, Trebz. If you haven't, that is surely worth a try. If you can tell us which AMD Gigabyte model it is (CPU-Z will do it), I'm sure someone will guide you through the process if you need any assistance.

Fingers crossed it gets sorted soon and you're a happy duck again.

glad its getting sorted.

some forums and moderators are more relaxed to sweary words being mistyped to pass the swear filter than others.

I know my self running a forum for retro bmw's some of our mods take a dim view on it where as myself I would let it slide to a certain degree

I do hope so.

I just bought three Xilence 120mm case fans ready for the system swap over into the Sharkoon Rebel Economy 9 case :-)

nice one. get plenty of air movement in there and a good flow of air towards the graphics card. heres my fan set up. my card idles around the 30c mark which im chuffed at.

bottom fans are all intake. the liquid cooler is used as an intake. the 2 top and rear are all exhaust

I get 6478 with the same card but you will be getting a bottle neck with your cpu so that would be expected.
have you tried youre game yet?

Wow I was shocked when the new PSU didn't fix it.

With the combination of the GPU working fine when RMA'd and the new PSU in place I was expecting it to run fine for sure.

Don't be disheartened, it isn't £300 quid down the drain so long as you eventually fix it and will continue to use your PC in future, which I'm sure are both givens. Refurb'd cards are often great value (albeit when they work), and the PSU and monitor are solid investments that should work great for years to come. Just keep plugging away at it, it's frustrating as hell but you know the satisfaction of making it work is wothwhile.

Either that or sell it all and buy a console :p

Hi All

And so the end result.

The replacement display card has been installed and everything is working perfectly. No more crashes or blue lines on the screen. I have played Alien Isolation for eleven hours now and it's fine.

I was right all along, it was the display card which caused the issues.

I'm a bit annoyed that I was told to buy both a monitor and a new power supply as it's now clear that these were not at fault. I do however understand and accept that the new power supply is superior to my old one and that I received a fair discount on the item. All of this, bear in mind, was done whilst I insisted that the problem was with the display card and Overclockers told me that they had tested it as working 'Ok'.

I would like to say that the staff I dealt with at Overclockers have been great and the turnaround of the returns etc was very fast. I'm actually quite happy with the customer service aspect of my dealings with Overclockers.

I could have done without all the faffing and cost however.

TTFN ladies and gents.

Ah good everything worked in the end. I read all way back to start of this thread. I was right the whole time pointed blamed on your video card but all the others incredible stupid and naïve guys blamed it on PSU but I knew the PSU usually did not caused blue lines in games. If you were followed my instructions to posted video clips to proved it did happened then you would been RMAed for new replacement and not paid for new PSU you not needed it.

Had you tested your old monitor with new video card? If it surprised worked then you would had not bought a new monitor but it was your decision to bought a new monitor yourself rather than borrowed HDTV from other room.

Hi, any chance I can get first dibs on the movie rights to this epic thread? I've got a working title in mind 'The Thin Blue Lines.' Only jesting but seriously though, it was interesting to see how it all panned out and turned out well for all parties concerned. PC building can be disheartening sometimes but think of all you learn by doing it. That's what makes us different from the average Joe console players. We have a passion for getting the very best we can for our hard earned. You simply won't find a better community in terms of expertise and good will to others like you do on the PC scene. I think Trebz you need to give the forum a break for a while now and go forth and play some games. All the best!

Really? Nothing like blowing your own trumpet is there.......

The fact of the matter is the OP's original PSU was garbage and shouldn't have been used anywhere near decent components. Who's to say the original PSU didn't damage the GPU in the first place?

Please, don't knock the genius who was telling the OP to get a new motherboard that wasn't needed, and who called the Arctic 700W with 75% efficiency and a single 6-pin 75W connector "a quality PSU". Show some respect.

Blimey, I remember reading this thread when it first popped up. Just finished reading through the last 5 pages. It's been a very interesting read.

I'm glad you got everything sorted in the end and well done OC UK for stepping up and offering such good CS.

I have just started Alien Isolation myself, I'm a bit of a ***** and can only play creepy games like this during the day so I haven't got too far.
What do you think of it? You must be pretty far having played it for 11 hours :P
