I'm looking to build a fairly high end system (Gaming) being the main reason.

What I have...
Multisync 24WMGX3 (24") --- Maybe a 30" later in the year.
True Copper HEatsink (heavy moFo)
Case (Midi Aliminimum Case with Fan controller)
Keyboard
Mouse G700

What i need............................... Questions
1. Motherboard............................ What offers best future proofing...
2. CPU....................................... the 2500 or 2600k, or anything coming up?
3. Ram....................................... I need a low profile set (Heatsink is too bulky)
4. Gfx Card................................. I want to game Ultra settings on 24" (I MAY get a 30" down the line.
5. SSD, Thinking of the Corsair 120GB...... Will 2x in RAID 0 be worth doing.
6. Headphone.............................. I would like a decent set.

I dont really have a budget but want the best bung for buck, if it can be overclocked to same money id sooner that. I would also sooner get a better motherboard if it seems me supporting new CPUs/GPUs.

I really appreciate all advice, i have been out the loop for a long while.

Motherboard : Asus P8Z68-V PRO GEN3 / AsRock Extreme4 Gen 3 / Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD4 / MSI Z68A-GD65-G3.
GPU : HD7970, but they are expensive atm. 6950 good mid-range.
CPU : 2500K, 2600K / 2700K if doing heavy duty multithreading (video encoding, that sort).
RAM : Vengeance Low Profile.
SSD : Crucial M4 / Kingston HyperX 128GB. Not worth raiding.
Headphones : not a clue.

Would be best if you give a rough budget, so that we can all know what money we have to work on, there is the "money no object" setup, then there is the budget version, or anything in between

Hi,

It will be for gaming but i may do some multi tasking so i would sooner go with the 2700K...

Budget... £1000 or a little more if i needs it.

I'll let the other guys do the spec as I'm not the best at it

But for headphones I'd seriously recommend looking for sennheiser ones, I got a set of then in hmv and the sound quality is as good as the beats ones but they were £40 really made gaming a lot better and they look pretty cool too :)

At what resolution, the size doesn't matter. But the resolution makes a big diifference.
At 1920 x 1080 a HD6950 or GTX 560Ti would be plenty good enough, but if you're going to a higher resolution, you'll need more GPU fire power ;)

Do you already have a good quality PSU ?

If you can stretch your budget, the spec above will be hard to beat. Do you have a further bit of cash available for a PSU, Case & storage drive?

For a headset, go with either the Corsair HS1 USB Gaming Headset or the updated Corsair Vengeance® 1500 Dolby 7.1 USB Gaming Headset.

Recently purchased the HS1, I LOVE it! I haven't had a single issue with it and the sound is amazing. Get the USB variant if you don't plan on buying a decent sound card though. :)

Do you have a SATA DVD drive?

Do you have a 32 or 64bit OS?

What PSU do you have, make and model?

Can you measure the distance in your case from the PCI slot to the HDD cages or other closet obstruction that may stop a long length GFX card from fitting?

Does your cooler have socket 1156/1155 fittings?

Motherboard
Get a Gen3 board this way it will support PCIE v3.0
Get a Z68 board to make best use of your SSD
Get a popular board to make sure it will support Ivy Bridge
You want to future proof so make you are can run SLI
Options include:
Asus P8Z68 Gen3
Gigabyte Z68 UD4,UD5,UD7 (make sure revision 1.3)
Asrock Extreme 4 and 7
MSI Z68A-GD65-G3

CPU
Ivy Bridge is on the horizon. For now just go with a 2500K dont splash out on an I7 just yet

RAM
Corsair Vengeance Low Profile, 8GB is fine but get 2 X 4GB so you can expand

GFX card
Ask this question seperately as its a topic all on its own

SSD
Dont RAID SSD's. The performance increase is not worth the increased risk of data loss. Additionally the life of your SSD will be decreased because TRIM is not available. Purchase a high end 64GB SSD and a large normal HDD and make use of Intel Smart Response

Headphones
What games are you playing? Do you NEED 5.1 positional sound? If you do then look at the Roccat 5.1 if you are ok with wired. If you want wireless then look at logitech. If you dont NEED 5.1 positional sound then just get a non-gaming headset and the sound quality will be better

WOW thanks for replys guys.

Answers to the above posts

1. I DO NOT have a PSU , forget this :/
2. The distance form PCI slot to HDD cage is 270mm (will the longer GPUs fit?)
3. I need a OS
4. I have rhe TRUE copper (I can get an adapter socket to fit the 1156)
5. DVD/blu ray driver (I need one of these also).

If we can improve/add to Dave Frans list id be happy.

The only thing I'd change is the memory. Either Vengeance LP, Kingston HyperX (which I have), or Corsair XMS3.

I have that motherboard and SSD, and no complains.

The TRUE copper should be good enough for some decent overclock.

As for the graphics card, for a 7970, you need 11.5'' / 12'' from the PCI slot to the obstructing hard drive bays (or if they are removable, then that's a moot point usually). About 10.5'' for the 560ti / 6950.

Dam i measured and its 11", thats from the edge of the PCI SLOT (not the end of the case) to the HHD bay. :/

I can also take the angle gringer to the HDD bay, or just remove it as ill only have a SSD :)

ok thanks.

I am getting there, just to check and finalize before i order.
