Hi guys,

I am in the process of building a new PC gaming rig, the last time I took the plunge into building something myself completely from scratch was around 2004/05, so I am somewhat out of touch with the latest and greatest and comparisons etc.

Therefore, I've opted for pre-built custom PC (more expensive, blah blah :p) as I am totally out of touch with what's compatible with what etc, socket types etc.

Based on reviews on the web and looking at pricing (based on an average from various websites, including this one) I have settled on a rough spec that I'd like.

Basic criteria are: powerful, fast, good degree of future proofing. I.e. powerful CPU, plenty of RAM (with option to upgrade) and high(ish) end graphics. I don't want to have to worry about upgrading in 12-18 months time. My preference is for Intel, and the i4770K looks like a proper beefcake so should suit my needs for a while :)

Below is the list of "the important stuff", obviously the build will be a whole new rig + OS, but items like OS, case etc are not listed below as that isn't so important for this discussion:

CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-4770K Quad Core 3.50 GHz 8MB Cache LGA1150
FAN: Cooler Master Seidon 120M Liquid Cooling System 120MM Radiator (Cooler Master Seidon 120M Liquid Cooling System 120MM Radiator)
HDD: 120 GB Crucial M500 Series SATA III Gaming MLC Solid State Disk(Single Hard Drive)
HDD2: 1TB SATA-III 6.0Gb/s Cache 7200RPM Hard Drive
MEMORY: 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3/1600mhz Dual Channel Memory (Kingston HyperX Blu w/Heat Spreader)
MOTHERBOARD: Asus B85M-G Intel B85 Chipset, Micro ATX Mainboard w/ 4 RAM slots, 8-Channel HD Audio, HDMI, GbLAN, USB 3.0, SATA-III, 1x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 & 2x PCIe 2.0 x1
POWERSUPPLY: Corsair 850 Watts RM850 80 Plus Gold Gaming Power Supply - Triple SLI Ready
VIDEO: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 2GB 16X PCIe 3.0 Video Card

I have asked on other threads on these forums regarding the graphics, and one helpful chap suggested the 280x from AMD which seems a comparable contender to the GTX 770 judging from reviews. So that's a consideration. I am undecided which to go for at this moment in time although personal preference is leaning towards nvidia.

I don't really need any more than 16 GB RAM (tbh 8 would suffice, but I want some degree of future compatibility/performance with upcoming games); I've opted for 2x8GB instead of 4x4GB as that gives me the option to expand to 32GB at a later date (I think? The mobo has 4x slots...).

I like the idea of having a small SSD on which to install **** like Windows, under the belief that this will confer some improvements in terms of performance with a larger seperate HDD to install the crap on. Is this worth wile, will I notice the speed increase with SSD?

Anyway, Guys, over to you :)

If you want a Compatible spec for a self build I would go

Intel Core i7 4770K "Haswell" CPU
Intel 520 Series 240GB SSD
ASUS Sabertooth Z87 motherboard
Fractal Design Define R4
GeForce GTX 780 video card
WD Green 3TB hard drive
Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR3 RAM
Seasonic G Series 550W power supply
bequiet! Dark Rock 2 CPU cooler

But thats my personal preference

What's your budget? There are loads of people here (myself included) who can help you with the specification to make sure that you get compatible products that will achieve what you want in the most balanced fashion.

£1,500 absolute tops, but this must be a complete base unit including OS, not interested in "fancy" cases or "fancy" cooling methods.

I've settled on the Intel processor, I definitely do not want AMD CPUs, regardless how much "bang for buck" they propose to deliver.

Graphics card I am looking around 770/280x performance wise.

Preferably I want to spend somewhere between £1,300 and £1,450.

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI Radeon R9 290 Gaming Edition 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £359.99

Total : £1,462.86 (includes shipping : £11.75).

Why?
  • MUCH better GPU
  • bigger SSD
  • arguably the best PSU money can buy today (although the 650W SuperFlower Golden Green would happily run this build for half the money)
  • great case for working in and good airflow too
  • awesome on-board sound on this motherboard
  • plus some room in the budget!

What more could you ask for?

(My underline)

Someone to build it for me? :p heh j/k I am sure I can muddle my way through (it's like Lego, only more expensive, right?)

Looks brilliant, cheers Havana. I'd really want to plump for 16GB instead of 8GB though. Still you've given me something else to consider.

:)

There are endless ways to configure these things, but my personal view is that the added performance of the 290X over the 290 is not worth the premium.

Also, the Superflower Golden Green 650W is at least as good as the NZXT PSU, and £15+ cheaper.

Also if you wanted to save money on that 290X from Beardy's spec, get a cheaper 290 which is much more worth the money than the 290X, £120 difference and like a 10% performance increase - could also go for a 780/780ti if you wished.

Maybe change to the Samsumg Evo 840 SSD as that's probably the best one out currently, otherwise that's awesome :D

Good config, ExtremeIC3cream.

I have been investigating many of these configs (or variations thereof) but for pre-built PCs.

I'm OK with spending a little bit extra to get a system built for me because, well, I'm lazy!

A few query points that I'm looking at:
  • SSD - worth it? I mean, really worth it? 1 TB of storage is more than enough for my needs, I am thinking of not having an SSD drive and sticking with a more traditional HDD.
  • Windows 8.1 versus Windows 7? I have noticed every config in this thread is looking at Windows 8.1. I've only used Windows 8 very briefly and thought it suuuuckked! :p Guess I am too used to Windows 7.

SSD is definitely really worth it. 100% It's the part that generally makes the most improvement to any machine. I had an old Q6600 system, pretty slow - put in an SSD and it made a massive difference.
