Hello All

Thank you in advance for any advice given in advance.

My son is 18 next month and is computer crazy. He has always had imacs until now, but he wants a new gaming pc. I am not good with computers so would really appreciate any help. This a special birthday/ Christmas present and we are willing to pay £2k maybe more for the right computer. Have been advised to use overclockers for this purchase.

He currently has a two screen set up from his imac which has an i5 processor. He plays games from more basic roblox , minecraft up to more advanced games. He watches lots of videos. He always has lots of windows open at same time and video calls his mates while playing. He is autistic and spends a large amount of time on his computer everyday. Its his escape and he loves it. He likes the lights and open tower design. He would like a i9 processor even though I do not think its needed. He tells me it needs a good graphics card and storage.

I was looking at this as its pre built. But can I ask you guys if you had £2000 to £2500 give or take is this the best bang for buck or can you recommend an alternative.

Hello Jay85
Thank you for your response and advice.

Can I ask what Alderlake is? ;) What do you think of the spec on that computer in link? Is that a good spec to be thinking about.

Thanks Again

Peter

No problem I will keep an eye out for any new or discounted models and I will post again towards the end of next week to see if you have any new recommendations
due to the new alderlake processor.

It is so helpful to get some independent and very knowledgeable advice.

Thank you ;);)

Hello Haz123

Thank you for your response. Wow that is a big jump in cost. As you say currently paying a premium for brand new tech.
Lets see what happens, I have bit of time yet. You have opened the option of AMD Ryzen which I would not have considered before.

You know what its like, I just want to get him the best spec I can. If you see anything else please post it

Thank you again for your help today.

Hello Everyone

Sorry was working at weekend and I did not have a chance to catch up.
First, thank you to all of you have taken time to post and share your views. All much appreciated.
After the posts about alder lake last week I went away thinking I was going to have to raid the piggy bank to get the alder lake model that was linked
by Haz123 as at that time you considered it the best option

1 x OcUK Gaming Zirconium - Intel Core i9 12900KF, GeForce RTX 3080Ti Pro Gaming PC = £3,724.97

However I am concerned after reading further posts this may have glitches that new technology is prone to when first released which is not something I can really consider when my son uses his computer everyday.

Haz123 has also suggested the following and Mickyflinn confirmed the ryzen model was good

I am now strongly considering the ryzen option above as its known technology. . Please can you reassure me this is a good decision as its a big outlay and I have heard of intel but not really heard so much of Ryzen. Also want to know this build is futureproofed for a while.

As I was considering extending myself moneywise to get alder lake, is there anything you would tweak on the ryzen build if you had a bit more budget? Maybe £3K maybe a bit more: next level ryzen processor, graphics card, storage or whatever to make it even better. Or is this advanced enough

I would like to get a case that lights up. Lan li was mentioned. Has anyone got a picture of one or something similar?

Can anyone suggest a good monitor to go with this? Would a 30inch be good? Other family members are going to get this for him.

Finally, please can you confirm he will be able to play his basic games such as roblox and minecraft as well as well as more advanced games otherwise i am in big trouble  Also that he will be able to do his homework, use windows as normal etc etc

Thanks to Craig and Joxeon as well. I think I would like to get the computer from from Overclockers if possible.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge
& thank you for sharing all of yours

Hello Again

Thank you to all of you again for your help and advice. My head is aching  but your patience and advice is invaluable to a non computer person like me.
Craig I would love to build it, but my son wants it for his 18th not his 30th birthday:cry:. No I am better leaving this to the experts.

I think with all your help I am nearly there. I have tweaked the original spec from Haz123 that everyone seems to agree on to include some minor advised upgrades. I don not know what the majority of things are on the configurator so I am 100% reliant on your expertise. I have added a light box. Anyone got any views on these? Would it be better to fill with fans as on some of your own builds. I like all of your builds and the big screens to view them on. Can you change colours etc.

Do you think case is right size or should it be bigger? The lan li cases all look similar. Do I need to fill the case up so it does no look bare? But want it to look smart as well.

I like the tubes in Haz123's own build. Is this expensive ?? Would it work with this set up?

Is there anything I need to add so when it comes out of the box it work? Is it worth upgrading to windows 11?

Is there anything else to be tweaked or upgraded to make this even more special in your opinions as you have created this build for my son;)

I am sorry

I have had trouble saving this configuration. I have even spoken to overclockers and they has sent me the previous link I posted

Hope this works

I have also been watching videos of lan Li boxes and they fit rads on some of them. Would I need them?
Would six fans or more if needed be better for the computer and what configuration is best Once again relying to your advice here.
I will speak to overclockers very nicely and ask them to fit them:cry: if you advise this is better than getting a light box

Thanks again

Hello Haz123 and Craig d1

Thank you for your continued posts with information and advice.
They are all greatly appreciated and especially the detail. I really do appreciate your time and effort. Thank you

Can I clarify with you just a few things as I want to make sure I am getting this right.

1) Haz123 changed your original spec to include this component below as per one of your earlier posts. Did I make a big enough
change. Is this good enough will it suit build. I also added light box but I think I will drop that now.
M.2 Solid StIate Drive 1 (Primary Drive If Selected):WD Black SN850 1TB SSD M.2 2280 NVME PCI-E Gen4 Solid State Drive (WDS100T1X0E)

2) I am not tied to the lian li but they do look nice and get good reviews. I just want to make sure its the right size for what is going in it so it does not look like an empty metal box. I do not want to keep changing things and driving you all mad either

3) Haz123 Will overclockers get over this issue below or would it be better to change case?

MZHOU SATA USB 3.0 Motherboard Front 19 Pin Male to Female Extension Cable - OCUK do not sell these afaik, I got mine from the Rainforest website. This is only needed if you get an O11 Dynamic and put fans on the base of the case. This will allow the front USB A ports to be connected.

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/kolink-argb-1-2-splitter-cable-30cm-ca-05h-kk.html - Depending on what fans you go for you may need some splitter cables like that one. Hopefully we can tell you what you require once you have decided on the fans.

4) Will the current build and components with some added fans suit box? I would like it to look nice and a bit wow if possible. If it looks like some of
the examples you have sent they look pretty cool;)

4) As I said I think I will drop light box and fill with fans. Hmmm which fans to many choices:D

From the videos you posted and like Craig advises maybe three on bottom and top and three standing up. This should hopefully make case look better and a bit wow.
But which ones !!! Going to have another think abut this tomorrow.

Many thanks again, all advice welcome and appreciated. Sorry if i keep asking basic stuff
Peter

Hello Haz123, Craig and everyone

Thanks for continued posts.

Sorry Craig I didnt see that new spec you put up last night. Thank you

I am open to any option, but I have to say the case is not as nice. Its ok but does not look wow and they say its a budget case. Maybe it needs more fans to light it up to look better. I have looked at loads of cases and reviews today,

Phantrks Enthoo Evolution seems ok
Corsair odsidan
Corsair 57ox seems to review well
Phanteks 500 reviews saying noisy if fans on high
Fractal design meshify 2
to name a few

I still think the lan li looks best in pictures and videos I have seen so far.

I think a AIO build is imperative. I am not confident in having to change any bits and your saying with the rapier this maybe needed. I need overclockers to send it to me ready to go.

Do we go back to original spec or is there any other AIO options. I thought this would be very straight forward, look at one and say that is it and order it. That shows my lack of knowledge.

Thank you again for your time and patience.
Peter

Hello Again

I have looked at so many computers today my eyes are popping out:eek:

I looked on other websites, saw one or two that are interesting including a corsair one pre built. Looks nice and gets good reviews. I did not want post as its a competitor.
I don't know if spec is as good as what you lads have recommended,

Have seen this one on overclockers which looks nice, but its intel and I would much prefer to stick to your specs.

▷ OcUK Gaming Glacier - Gigabyte Vision, RTX 30… | OcUK (overclockers.co.uk)

Not totally discounting the cheaper link that you advised the the 360 case as you said its good value for money.

May call overclockers tomorrow and speak to them.

Please let me know if you see any other deals.

Thanks Again

Peter

Hello Everyone

I hope you are feeling better today Craig

Thank you Haz123 for your new post

Looking at your set up there, that looks very similar to the Corsair one I was looking at yesterday. Yours has more fans. I really like the cool white. Can I post just the spec of the one I have seen without any advertising so you can see it and ask overclockers to quote?

Thanks Again
Peter

Hello Again

I have just spoken to Overclockers and they have said that the build cost would be £100-200. They can add extra fans at a cost of £10 per fan

I have also asked about cases and I can add any case that is not in the configurator. Maybe that is the same for components as well?

They said I could have a lian li dynamic with the rapier spec for example.

Does this change your ideas now I can choose fans and they will fit them and any case? If the computer works out a little more expensive than I will stretch as its a long term purchase.

My sons birthday is the 12th of December. But he knows it could come a little bit after his birthday because its so near Christmas and companies get busy.

Craig can I ask how much the components roughly cost for your build?

Thanks

Peter

I am going to post this spec of the corsair build computer I saw yesterday for your comments.

I now think it would be between this (get it built by overclockers), Craigs build or get something built in the lian li on your recommended specs and extra fans added by oveclockers
