new gaming pc help

I didn't mean to start an argument about it. I see a lot of 'leet performance for £500' rigs, with overpowered gpu and cpu along with relatively low spec components. You could take the same cpu and gpu, put it in your main rig, and you'd worry about the temperature. They're not suddenly cooler coz they're in a cheaper rig.

fair point - Out of curiousity, what cases do you recommend then, that don't break the bank but provide adequate cooling?

Ive found a price for this PC thats already been built for £533 delivered. How does it compare to the one suggested above? Id like to get one thats already built cos of the 1yr warranty. Ive looked at the ready built pcs here like the Titan Sabre" AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 Black Edition 3.10GHz @ 3.30GHz DDR2 System. But im not sure if its worth getting the X3 or X2

For what you need that slightly overclocked dual will be absolutely fine and then whenever you need the extra power you can just drop in a quad. I've heard that amd are bringing out some nice high clocked quads for am3 so you could be looking at very good upgradability when you need it.

95thrifles spec is good but if your not keen on building yourself the prebuilt spec you posted seems fine too.

+1 for this, except check if the power supply with the pre built is a decent brand like seasonic/corsair etc otherwise powering stuff like the pii 955 and a 4890 on a 450w budget psu is not a good idea, i'd always go with a well trusted brand psu otherwise you could end up blowing your entire system from a cheap psu going bang.

The most important point here is that cases don't break. Everything in your PC can break, die, whatever. But unless you set it on fire, you'll be able to re-use your case. Until there's some new form-factor etc anyway. Buying a solid case will take care of your PC now, and the one after that, and maybe the one after that too.

If I was going to build a PC for myself today, I would get an Antec 1200. At £137.99 inc VAT they're not particularly cost-effective, so considering some cheaper options...

The Coolermaster HAF. Fantastic airflow for £94.99 inc VAT.

The Antec 902. Fantastic airflow for £92.99 inc VAT.

I really wouldn't go lower than that. You can trash everything by getting the cooling solution wrong, don't be a cheapass :)

Why? That is a very good case for the money and spending more would mean sacrificing on components.

Also an aftermarket is only required if looking to overclock.

Or for sound...

only reason i wanted a pre built one was incase something went wrong like the power supply damaging the motherboard. if i had a pre built one it has a 1yr warranty.
Am i better off going for the X3 then for gaming?

That would only happen if you had a rubbish PSU Model, which OCUK don't even sell. Or a faulty one, in which case you would RMA it. The CPU doesn't have much impact on gaming, the GPU is a far bigger factor. Seriously, this is an example:

E2140 + 8400GS in TF2 with all settings on maximum i got 15-20fps
E2140 + X1950 Pro in TF2 with all settings on maximum i get 50-60fps

Both times everything was at stock, even the cooling. I'd suggest getting the dual core and putting the money towards a better GPU. I'd suggest waiting for DX11 though. With the right motherboard and a bit of luck you can unlock one or two cores of the 550 (or the 545) to make it a tri or quad core anyway.
