Ok this is my build for my new gaming pc

I5-4670K Haswell
Asus Z87-A 1150 mobo
MSI GTX780
2x4 Kingston HyperX Performance DDR3 1866
Corsair TX750W
Creative Labs Xfi Gamer sound card
4 hard drives

Now the problem is very random and doesn't really point to a specific thing, on my new build when i boot up the pc i usually get the 1 beep "all ok" and boots to windows but on other occasions the "cpu led" will stay lit and then other occasions it will go through the post and load to windows and on a lot of occasions the system will just lock up when playing games like BF3 or Crysis 3. Ive also had problems where i can get into the bios and it will also just freeze up? I first noticed problems occurring when i was on BF3 and like a weird sort tapping noise coming from my speakers like fading in and out. Even when i played music it did this. I have done the usual point of elimination and cannot get to the root problem, i have reseated the cpu and it seemed to work fine but then the problem came back with it just randomly not booting then booting then freezing on game ect ect. The mobo is only 8 days old as is the cpu. I have even tried booting the system with no card in at all and get the same where the "cpu led" would stay on and nothing else would happen but when i turn the computer on then off it would get past the "cpu led" and carry on to boot?????? never had a problem like this before and its driving me crazy :-(

Could there be an intermittent fault with the motherboard???
Is the cpu somehow faulty????
Have i got enough power???? i think so
It cant be the my sound card because it does exactly the same with onboard sound.
Have tried the mem sticks in different slots and individually.

All the items apart from the Mem, Sound Card and Psu are not even 10 days old!!!

Please help guys this is driving me nuts!!!!!

Sounds like a motherboard, CPU or PSU fault to be honest. RAM faults wouldn't exhibit the symptoms you've described.

I can't think of an easy way to test without swapping stuff out either. Do you have spare kit to swap out?

It's a start. Give it a go and report back :)

Oh, before you start all that, have you tried resetting the CMOS? (should've mentioned it first tbh)

remove the gfx card, mobo has onboard from what i can see so try that first, bf3 might struggle a fair bit, but just run at 800x600 all low gfx settings for testing.

are the gfx card and cpu temps looking ok ?

any of the system overclocked ?

all drivers (mobo etc) loaded ok ?

what drivers you using on the graphics card ?

Have taken my gtx780 out and still the same, nothing is overclocked, have tried both graphics card drivers that are available for the gtx780. Am getting freezing in the UEFI bios, have tried different mouse and keyboard so i havent got a clue what is going on????

Have you tried changing out the PSU?

Ok i am now on the pc in question and all i have done is re-seat the cpu, everything is now back in the computer running, i have just played Crysis 3 for around 45mins and BF3 for about an hour. There has been no lockup, crash or anything else. Im totally stumped as to what it is because yesterday i did the same thing by re-seating the cpu and all was fine upon till around 9ish and then i started to get total freeze and the computer wouldn't boot. Ive played around with it today by point of elimination again and still nothing until i re-seated the cpu!!!! please help guys, need to sort this out.

afraid i have no idea, sounds like a dodgy processor or mobo.

any thermal paste get onto the bottom of the processor or in the processor slot on the mobo ?

no none at all, its the stock heatsink which i have just put back on with no extra paste!! tis really weird, have just played crysis 3 for another 30mins and no lockups or anything? will try again tomorrow and see what happens.

ok played crysis 3 for another 2 hrs non stop and all was fine, could the re-seating of the cpu have anything to do with it running fine? plus this is the second time i have re-seated it. the only thing i haven't put back into the computer is the creative labs x-fi game sound card.

Gonna try bf3 for a few hrs tonight and see how it goes!

tbh im stumped on why ive had all the problems ive described then all of a sudden after re-seating the cpu it all works fine?

Ok just switched my computer on tonight, loaded Crysis 3 up and got to the main menu then complete lockup!!!!!!!!!!! what the hell is going on with this machine? its been running fine for the last 2 days playing BF3 and Crysis 3 then all of a sudden turn the machine on, load up the game and complete lockup! have decided to send the mobo back and get a replacement. Hopefully the replacement will be fine, if not then maybe the cpu is faulty somehow? but would i get complete lockup in windows with a dodgy cpu?

give up to be honest :-(

Just bad components. Does sound like a bad motherboard. The frustrating thing is with issues like these you have to just throw money at it / RMA stuff till it goes away.

I've just been reading about psu compatibility, didn't know that a psu could or could not be compatible with a CPU, could this be the case with my psu??

Ok I've just checked the compatibility for my PSU and it is 100% compatible so I think I can rule out my PSU.

Any thoughts on this?
