Hi guys i’d like to know your thoughts on some specs i've put together for a new gaming setup for Bioshock,Pes 2008, World In Conflict, Crysis etc.

Ok
Mobo – Abit IP35 Pro (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
Memory – 2x OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK)
or
2x Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz Dual Channel Kit (BL2KIT12864AA804)

PSU - Antec Quattro 850W PSU (Any idea when these are due back in stock?)

CPU Cooler - Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/LGA775) I’ve heard that these coolers tend to have a slightly concaved base and that it’s recommended to do some lapping before install, I would prefer to go for a cooler without the need for prep work, so perhaps you could recommend some other coolers for a cpu overclock of 3.6ghz or more.

Fan For Cpu Cooler - Noctua NF-S12 1200RPM 120mm Silent Case Fan - 3 Pin

And a gaming headset - SpeedLink Medusa SL-8793 5.1 ProGamer Edition

But I have a dilemma, would it be better to wait for an upgrade at the end of the year when Intel release their 45nm Penryn processors or perhaps wait and see if AMD’S Phenom desktop processors turn out to be a decent competitor?.

My current setup is
AMD Athlon X2 4800+ (939) @ 2.9ghz under Freezer 64 pro
2gb Corsair 3500LL Pro RAM
OCUK 8800gtx
2x Samsung Spinpoint 500gb HDD
1x Sony DL DVD RW
X-FI Xtreme Music
22" Samsung Syncmaster 226BW
OCZ GameXstream 700w

That would do quite well. Your current PSU is more than sufficient so you don't need a new one. I'd take the OCZ RAM because the specs are essentially the same and it's less expensive. I'd still take the Thermalright cooler. The surface finish issues are largely resolved now methinks and it's the best cooler on the market. Remember that it needs a 120 mm fan.

The main reason I thought about getting a new Power supply is due to the 700w OCZ being a bit too noisy for my liking, but I guess I could stick it if it meant saving over £100

cheers

If you're looking for a new PSU I recommend the Corsair 620W for a high-end rig. It's quiet and powerful as heck. You could probably sell your OCZ and pay for the Corsair.
