HI all,

I am after a little bit of advice.

I currently have a Quad core Q8200 running at 2.33Ghz on a gigabyte board.
with 4 gig of ram.

I have a NVIDIA Geforce 9800 GT and i think after having this PC for almost 3 years its time for at least a grx card update. ( my budget would be about £100 to £150 but would ideally like something for around £120 obviously if the card is a lot better and closer to £150 i might go for that one )

I am not sure what people can recommened and if i have a big enough power supply to get a largish card but any recommendations would be nice.

I am also in the market for a new wireless headset anyone out there recommend any they have used? I see Plantonics have a new set out wondering if they are anygood.

I have the XFX 6950 which is damn awesome for 200quid

OCUK have the HIS 6950 on offer for this week at 173 quid, dunno if theres much difference.

Also you can try getting the Nvidia 460, heard they are ok as well.

Wait till a few of the pro's reply.

There is this 1GB 460 here (Image may not be what you will receive)

XFX5850 (I would avoid Sapphire's, they have issues)

I would actually go fir the sapphire. I it has issues, just return under DSR.
The GTX460 is also a great card but i would get the 5850. You may also want to consider a 5870 for £160

@Cleeecooo, Yeah I know that mate, It's just such an unnecessary gamble.. Graphics cards are nightmare to deal with when things go bad.

As for 5870, Hell yeah!

Lets put it this way.

If you budget is a maximum of £150

If its between the 69501Gb and the 58701Gb, although performance wise, they are similar, get the 6950 as it will benefit from the drivers more than the 5870.

If you wanted to go beyound this budget the next card up would be a GTX480.

But to get the best out of any GPU purchase, overclock that cpu to at least 3Ghz if possible.

If you want nearer to the £100-£120 mark, then the 5850's and 460's are what your looking at.

Although to be honest I dont like the look of any of those 460's.

He would prefer to spend around £120, allowing up to £150 for anything really special; Since there isn't anything special (maybe a 5870) Then It has to be a 5850.

Many thanks for the replies. I had a little hover out of the inside of the PC today and can give a bit more info.

The Power supply is a FSP400 60-HLN and I have a MS 7830 v1.2 Motherboard. From research i can see that the motherboard is locked with the current CPU multiplyer and FSB speed so I dont think there is anyway to overlock using this board (Please correct me if I am wrong would love to get some free extra performance)

So, my question now really is how much of an upgrade will the 5850 be over the 9800GT i have currently and would it actually be worth spending the extra money on a better card (GTX480) bearing in my the rest of my system. I assume the more expensive card would use more power and therefore I might need a new power supply I am keen to avoid that problem.

Many thanks.

You can rule out a GTX480.. It's too good and power demanding for your system.

Your power supply is a non branded 400 Watt? I'm not even sure a 5850 is suitable for you now.. You would need to upgrade our PSU and Motherboard to gain full maximum potential, that's the price you pay for having an oem machine.

Finally YES the 5850 is an awesome card.. Nothing price wise from Nvidia can beat it.
