New Gigabit Network but Slow Speeds

Hi, I've just added a gigabit switch to my network and installed a gigabit network card into one of my PC's. The other PC I'm working with already had gigabit LAN built in. However, I'm getting some weird (frustrating) results.

One PC is running XP Pro and the other Vista Ultimate (32bit). I've been testing file transfers with a 4.33gb media file and have found that if I initiate the file transfer from the XP machine (file either coming to it or going from it) then it completes in around 1min 50secs. But if I start the transfer using the Vista machine then the same transfer takes around 9min 50secs from XP machine to Vista machine. Going the other way it takes around 3mins.

Any ideas what is causing the speed differences...particularly the slow transfer from XP to Vista when started on the Vista machine?

apart from 'Vista sucks' are you playing music on vista when transferring files?

Have you tried via ftp/http rather than cifs (smb)?
As I was just trying out the new hardware I was being careful not to have anything else running that might affect throughput...AV off, Firewall off and no other apps running on either machine.

Think you may well be right about the 'Vista sucks' bit!

I had this and never got it resolved unfortunately.
Building vmware machines at 8gb size under vista then transferring them over the network to an xp laptop, it just crawled at 5% utilization.
It was quicker to dual boot back into xp to copy the image over, xp to xp it copied at 30% utilization at least.

Slow network speeds are a known problem in Vista using explorer, FTP is a lot faster. I believe it's fixed in SP1.

I seem to recall hearing that before. Is SP1 out yet or is that something we are waiting for...haven't noticed it in Windows Updates?

SP1 is still at RC (release candidate) stage. I'm not sure when it will be officially released.
There a thread or two floating around here somewhere.

**UPDATE**

Just to give you all an update...a beta (RC) of Vista SP1 is available from the Microsoft site and I installed it this afternoon.

I'm pleased to report that this has completely fixed the transfer speed issues I was having and I am now able to transfer files at what I guess is close to the rate you would expect from a gigabit connection. The 4.33gb file now transfers in approx 1min 30secs in both directions, when started from either machine.
