Hi all.

Been a long time lurker on this excellent forum.
Built a gaming pc three years ago and just trying to do a cheap but effective upgrade on the Gpu, spec as follows-
corsair 600t
sabertooth x58 mobo
i7 950 bloomfield
Noctua NH-D14
corsair ax 750
gigabyte 470 super overclocked
3x2 gb corsair dominator 1600

Thinking about trying to oc the i7 to 4Ghz
Then buy a new Gpu, but been out of the loop for a while.
any help would be most welcome, cheers ant.

is your cpu still at stock then? if so at least get it to like 3.4 ghz ish you can do that on stock voltage most of the time so its very easy! it depends on your budget as to what gpu you go for, a radeon r9 280x or a nvidia gtx 680/770 or better would be a very nice upgrade! The cpu wont be much of a bottleneck to any single gpu.

£250 ish for budget.
would rather go with nvida.
Yeh would like to overclock to 4Ghz, once I've got my cooling sorted.
Thanks for the overclocking guide link.

Cheers ant.

gtx 680/770 it is then (770 pretty much same card as 680) they are around 250 and would be a very nice upgrade.

So the gtx 770 would be a huge upgrade to the gtx 470?
Like I said its been 3 years since I studied components.

cheers ant.

Yes, it will be a very nice upgrade. I found a single wf gtx 670 to be a nice improvement over gtx 470 sli. System was also an x58 rig.

To be honest, it would be much more worth while to pay the extra and go for the GTX780 instead.

The 2GB vram on the GTX770 could be an issue in the near future (if not already is in some games). With the GTX780, you get around 30%~35% faster in speed with the combination of more GPU grunt and higher memory bandwidth, also you get 1GB more vram headroom for the peace of mind as well.

You can always grab a 4gb gtx770 as the iChill or phantom but then we are talking about 300 quid at least. If I was buying a 770 I would get the Classy or Phantom

It would be silly to pay that much for a GTX770, even if it is with 4GB. It might have more vram, but the GPU and memory bandwidth available would remain the same.

Yeh like the lower price

Also like giga rma service if needed and looks better.

Would the i7 950 be a bottle neck if I got it clocked to 4 Ghz ?

Cheers for advice guys.

side note, once u get your 950 stable at 4GHz if your temps are fine go higher:)
my 960 lives at 4.4 with a old h50 cooler , Your air one is actually better iirc so if you have a nice clocker you migh well even end up higher

Sounds good, but but need to learn how to clock yet seems pretty complex what I've read so far.
Got 2 week hols to learn though :D
Temps so for are 32 on idle and 60 on p95 for an hour, stock atm.
