new gpu for vr

Would you pay double the price for the same car but with a 3.2ltr engine as opposed to a 3.0ltr? Just because you have the money doesn't mean you should waste it.

For OP going from an R9 290 + 4770k any of these new cards would feel absolutely massive in terms of the upgrade.

I agree 100%. Nobody actually needs anything faster than a 3080. However, a lot of forum members bought a 3080ti or a 3090 and they insist they need it.

Some people just don't seem happy unless they have these expensive things. I don't understand it myself. Yet since the OP mentioned £1,400, my brain automatically placed him in the 'expensive things' category.

Need is relative. On a normal monitor, I'd absolutely agree. VR though is another step entirely, and whilst you can get by on something less, it's not like you're going from 140fps to 170fps, and barely noting a difference. It can easily be the difference between being able to drive the game at 40fps or 60fps, and using reprojection to get from 80 to 120. Or on "easier" games, simply being able to do that without needing reprojection (or going from 72-90). Something like Star Wars squadrons for me, hitting 90fps is far more important than better graphics at 72, because of the movement it looks bad at 72. If I could get to 120 I'd be really happy. And if I had £1400 budgeted, then that's what I'd be targeting. The top level cards also tend to hold their value pretty well over time, assuming you don't get scalped in the first place.

EDIT - And to add, someone willing to spend £1400 on a graphics card is probably going to be ok with dropping £1k on their VR kit, so won't just be trying to drive an old rift S on it.

Availability man.

I had a 3080 and passed it on to my brother thinking I'd get another.

Soon found out how hard it was and the 3080 Ti FE was available and better priced than the available 3080s.

The change from a 3080FE vs a 3090FE will probably buy a 4080 which will be atleast 30% faster than a 3090 so makes sense especially with it only being less than a year away and if you miss out the 3080 the 3080ti/3090 always stick around long enough to easily get one after anyway.
