okay ill give that a go tomorrow, currently gone back to the old card and everythings back working fine

btw i did find that the card seemed happy to run in safemode but not in normal mode with aero. not sure if thats just aero bring more gpu demanding and enough to knock it over?

I'll add a few more things to consider too:

You can also get issues like this if the card isn't properly seated - even ever so slightly.

It could also be a bios issue - some motherboards required bios updates to work with newer cards. What's you motherboard?

well i dont believe its a seating issue, as i took it swapped back for the old one which ran fine so i put it back in, ran fine for a few win then died again and went into its die a few seconds after booting pattern. that what makes me think its heat / faulty as the temp monitor never went high.

as for mobo its an AX78 from the now dead Abit, not holding my breath for a bios update there

okay problem solved but think i have a new one, found the bios was set to only give out a max of 75watts to the gpu so i have upped that and all seems well. the card will now run fine and i can floor the cpu and gpu and all seems stable.

however when i max the gpu it makes a noise. its a high pitched electronic sounding noise like a cheap power adapter, is this normal or a sign something is about to go pop?

It's normal in that it can happen, capacitor squeal - is it definitely the card or the motherboard or PSU?

My GTX 280 used to do that a lot. Common problem with high powered cards if you Google it, but I wouldn't expect a low power 5550 to do it.

Some people send cards back if they are squealing, depends how bad it is and it's up to you.

you have sorted the drivers out havnt you?
if yes, RMA the thing and get a NORMAL card, not a Passive cooled.
LOL

well have an SSD coming so will do a clean install and see if all is well and if not then its going back but im still not getting a normal card, gpu fan always go and start making noise and ive had enough of it, i rarely game so i dont need anything powerfull anyway
