Hi all, long time lurker first time poster from one of the crowns flag planting phases (NZ).

Many thanks for providing such a great resource that is this site and its members.

I'll get to the point quickly so you can get back to soccer.

I have a hybrid system made up of bits of my old system (GPU) and a newer system (The rest) I built for Dads business that he forgot about when he fell in love with his Surfacebook.

i7 8700 @ 3.20GHz 29 °C
32.0GB Dual-Channel DDR4 @ 1599MHz (16-18-18-36)
ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. PRIME Z370-A II (LGA1151)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB (Gigabyte) 34 °C
Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 1T (OS) + Samsung SSD 860 EVO M.2 1TB (Storage)
RM550X V2 550W Power Supply 80 Plus Gold Fully Modular

I mostly play space sims and RPG's like Witcher, Star Wars Empire at War (AOTR Mod) and anything with Big stompy Robots (Mech warrior, BattleTech etc)
I can play most of my games in 1080P at High settings but I am increasingly starting to find games that are pushing my FPS below 60 or my settings to medium.
This system gave me 60+ FPS at 1080 at High for about 5 years (with a swap from 6700k and 16gb in the middle part)

All I want is an upgrade so my system can do the same BUT with 1440P at 60+fps for a few years.
Is a simple upgrade to a 3070 going to be enough to accomplish that? (If so would it just slot in with my current mobo etc with no problems?)
If not what else do I need to add?

P.S. I hope this is in the right section as I didn't know if General or GPU section was most appropriate.

There's some legs left in it for a GPU upgrade, yes. I think a 3060 Ti/RX 6700 and up will give you a big performance jump @ 1440p compared to the 1060, but if that's a non-K CPU running at stock then it will be holding them back a bit, depending on the game.

Yeah, it is a non-k. What would u recommend then if I was going to upgrade the CPU? a newer intel or scrap this MOBO and get a new one with some sort of Ryzen?

From what I've seen, used 1151v2 CPUs are still silly prices, so I'd go 12/13th gen (if you want to keep your RAM, which you might as well), but for now I'd just go with the graphics card upgrade.
