Hi all

As the title says - I'm looking for a new GPU as an upgrade for my EVGA 1060 SC 6gb.

CPU is a i7 6700k and budget is between £300 - £400.

I'm currently gaming at 1080p, though that will change to 4k in the future. I want something that is a worthwhile upgrade, though I don't tend to play the latest and greatest games; my most played recently is Frostpunk, which does make the fan kick in quite loud, so I want a reasonably quiet card.

Any suggestions?

That's my NVIDIA option, what would be the AMD option?

same for amd there should be juicy info if not next gen cards by the end of the year from team red too.

if you need a gpu right now opt for a cheap 5700 xt, they are good for 1440p gaming, but if you can wait see what nvidia has to offer, i suspect when next gen amd cards land prices will be stabilise between the two so we the consumer will benefit

It's a tricky one because I don't want to wait until November tbh because the fan on this 1060 is getting on my nerves, but I would like to get a good card for a decent price. I'll have a look at the RX 5700XTs.

I'm tempted to say pick up a used one for now but those seem hardly decently priced these days. I'd expect more to be hitting the used market now or soon as we're close to next gen
Would be a shame to buy new now when next gen coming from both AMD and Nvidia soon.

That's true but then those new cards will be at the very top end of my price range surely, plus, as you say, the used cards aren't exactly competitively priced anyway.

I'll give it some more thought - the other option would be to look into an aftermarket cooler for my 1060, but I do feel that would be money better saved towards a new shiny GPU lol.

Is the fan making weird noises or is it just a general issue you have with the fans being loud?

If it's the fan going bad just replace it, it's fairly simple to do and you can find replacements for pretty cheap, I've seen replacement GPU fans going for £5-15.

Check ocuk b grade for a 5700xt or 2070s they are 300 to 350ish

Nah it's just the general noise the single fan makes upon load; it sounds like my PS4 only worse. The card is tiny, so the fan isn't that big and it does irritate me after a while.

ITX card?

Understandable I guess, you could try an undervolt and custom fan profile to tide you over? If you limit your FPS target it should help too as the card wont be working as hard.

For a worthwhile upgrade from what you have you're looking at a 5700 or 2070, and it just seems a shame given there's new cards out very shortly.

Edit: Double post, forum is funky as hell today for some reason.

Yeah it's caught me out on the case section of the forum I posted a new thread but it kinda froze, then when I went back to the case section I couldn't see my thread so I posted it again then two were there?!

Yes it's a tiny card but it's been fantastic; there's a chap on here who was upgrading from a 5850 and I relate this card to that, which I know sounds daft but they are/were such good cards.

I've had a look on the B grade section as Illuminist suggested and I have noticed a ASUS RTX 2070 @ £375, which seems like a great choice but I'm just a bit weary of the b grade.

You could get one new for that sort of money, or do you mean a 2070S?

Always negotiate with b-stock stuff, they'll often give you a better price if you ask and given new cards are set to launch very soon I expect they're wanting to clear out some of their older stock. I saw an AMD 5600XT go for £200 yesterday, which is a cracking price for that card to be honest.

The b-stock stuff nets you 3 months warranty via OCUK and potentially more via the manufacturer, but it depends on the company and other factors.

It's the ASUS RTX 2070 Super, which goes for £499 new.

There's plenty of choice on there though to be fair so I'll take a closer look.

I guess it's pot luck is it in that you get a card and then see what the manufacturer is willing to offer for support if any? I've never bought B grade before so i'd just like to know how it works.

Ta for the responses everyone by the way, much appreciated.

It really will depend on various factors, if someone just sent the card back unopened because they changed their mind for example, I doubt you'd have a problem, the thing is there's no way to know unless OCUK give you the information.

That said, Asus have pants customer support at the best of times, I refuse to buy their products new.

Christ, and I'm considering a B grade card?!

I've had EVGA for the past few GPU purchases and they've been solid, I've got time to mull it over anyway so I'll take my time.

If you were going to buy a new GPU right now, considering my specs and everything else, what would it be?

Given the card is sticking with your above system and isn't going to be transferred, I would probably be looking at a 5700XT or 2070S max. Personally I'd save some cash and see if I could get a good deal on a 1660S/5600X/2060.

I wouldn't spend more than £200 on a new 1660S, I wouldn't spend more than £250 on the other two.

That's where b-stock might help you out if you put in an offer.

With the b-stock stuff it's best to go into it assuming you're buying second hand at a healthy discount (assuming you can negotiate one) with 3 month warranty, and that you might be lucky by getting the full warranty leftover from whenever the card was originally purchased.

There's some b-stock 5600XT's at the moment and I've seen them go for £200, one went for that yesterday, here's an example of what's available:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £289.99 (includes shipping: £0.00)

If OCUK could do that for £200 should you ask, personally I'd give it a punt. The new models cost less last I checked so I expect there's a healthy discount to be negotiated. Gigabyte are one of the better companies for customer support anyway so I find it more plausible that should something go wrong after the 3 months you'd get some help.
