New GPU to go with new CPU (5800X3D)

I'm upgrading a few components and will be buying a new GPU next month.

I currently have :

- Gigabyte X570 AORUS ELITE
- AMD RYZEN 7 3700X EIGHT CORE 4.4GHZ
- Gigabyte GEFORCE RTX 2070 SUPER WINDFORCE OC
- Patriot Viper Steel 16GB (2x 8GB) 3600MHz DDR4 C17
- Corsair RM750x 750W

However, I have bought a new CPU and some new memory :

- AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D Cache Eight Core 4.5GHz
- Corsair Vengeance LPX Black 32GB (2x16GB) 3600 MHz DDR4

So I just need a new GPU to go with the above.

Games played are GTA V, Far Cry 6, Hogwarts, Red Dead 2 and Forza, but I'd like it to be a bit more 'future proof' and ideally ready for GTA VI.

I've been recommended on here the 'Gainward GeForce RTX 4070 Ghost 12GB GDDR6X PCI-Express Graphics Card' but just wondering if there's any other similar cards I should be looking at and/or that people can recommend.

For 1440p a 4070 can handle those games fine, but based on the demands of newer games, I'd not like to predict how GTA VI is going to play, especially if ray tracing is used.

What's your budget? What res are you playing at?

Also your psu may limit you

That Gainwards one is £ 560, so probably looking at spending in that 500, - 600, range.

I've play on a "AOC 34" CU34G2X 3440x1440 VA 144Hz" screen so tend to play on 3440x1440.

That PSU is only 2.5 years old, would that really need replacing already ? Just for the GPU, or does this new CPU need more then 750w as well ?

Well if you only looking at spending in the 500, - 600 range only option is 4070 or 6950xt

Agree, it's a 4070 or 6950.

Look at what games you play and see which is best, also are you bothered about raytracing? I'm not, but you may like it.

As for your PSU, it's fine. But higher end GPU'S generally recommended 850w PSU's.

Yeh, at the moment the only sensible options in that price range are the 4070 or 6950 (or 6900XT if you can get it a decent bit cheaper than the 6950, but there doesn't seem to be so many of these about).

It is that or wait for the possible 7800/7800 XT or up your budget to £750 and get a 7900XT

As the 6950xt has 16 instead of 12 GB I'll probably go for that one, though I'm not looking to buy the GPU until next month anyway and just read somewhere online some new cards will get announced by the end of this month so I'll see what's what the first week of June I think.

The other thing I'm trying to find out is if it'll fit on my mainboard. I'm sure when I bought it 'somewhere' I read what the maximum dimensions for a GPU were and the GPU I went for then RTX 2070 SUPER obviously fell within that. But now for the love of God I can't seem to find those dimensions anywhere.

Not in the (online) manual, not in the specs or on the website (https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/X570-AORUS-ELITE-rev-10#kf), has anyone got any pointers as where I would find this, just so I can bear it in mind when buying the new GPU.

why would your motherboard dictate card length? its normally an issue of it not fitting in the case

16gb vs 12gb but the 12gb card also supports dlss 3 frame gen which is used on at least 1 game you listed there

If you can stretch to a 7900XT then that would be a better option, you'll get about 36% more raster performance over a 4070 at 1440p UW and don't have to worry about VRAM running out anytime soon. RT is better on the 7900XT as well although no DLSS.

Might be tempted by that... Is that card still compatible with my mainboard, which lists this for GPU options :

Integrated in the CPU (PCIEX16):
· AMD Ryzen™ 5000 Series/ 3rd Gen Ryzen™ Processors:

  1. 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, supporting PCIe 4.0 and running at x16
· AMD Ryzen™ 5000 G-Series/ Ryzen™ 4000 G-Series/ 2nd Gen Ryzen™ Processors:
  1. 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, supporting PCIe 3.0 and running at x16
    * For optimum performance, if only one PCI Express graphics card is to be installed, be sure to install it in the PCIEX16 slot.
· 2nd Generation AMD Ryzen™ with Radeon™ Vega Graphics processors/AMD Ryzen™ with Radeon™ Vega Graphics processors:
  1. 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, supporting PCIe 3.0 and running at x8
Integrated in the Chipset (PCIEX4/PCIEX1):
  1. 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, supporting PCIe 4.0/3.0 and running at x4 (PCIEX4)
  2. 2 x PCI Express x1 slots, supporting PCIe 4.0/3.0

Yes, you can put any currently available graphics card in that board no problem.
