Just wondering if you knowlagable people could give me some advice.

I'm thinking about upgrading to a new graphics card as my system hasn't had a upgrade for quite a while now...

My system now:

Motherboard: Asus P5W DH Deluxe
Processor: Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Series GPU
Memory: Geil Ultra DDR2 PC6400 (4 x 1GB) 800MHz (4-4-4-12) (4GB)
PSU: Coolermaster eXtreme Power 650W
HDD: Western Digital 500GB (x2)
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate

Im only thinking of upgrading my GPU at the moment (I want to play Mass Effect) would I see a moderate improvement if I to get say......a XFX 9800GTX 512MB DDR3 Dual DVI TV Out PCI-E?

yes you will see a vast improvement with thwat card, but i would wait until the new ati and nvidia cards are out first which are due in a few weeks

As above, and if the new cards are too steep, then an 8800 GT/GTX or 9800 GTX/GX2 would be good.
Although the GX2 is quiet expensive also, but prices may fall come june.

I'd say wait until June when new GPUs are coming out.

In this case where’s the logic in waiting for the new gen cards to come out. Mass Effect is out in less than a week, you'll have to wait another 2 weeks for the 1st release of the new RV and GT based cards. Then there’s the issue of initial availability and inflated release prices. Makes sense to go for a current good value card like the 8800gt which will easily be able to run Mass Effect and will be worlds better than his old 6 series card.

I think what he means is; wait for the new cards to come out so you can get the current 'good cards' at reduced prices. Usually they are best value when a new release has been made.

if you really want one now,go for a nvidia 8500/8600,so you dont have to splash out before the new cards arive :)

If I was going for one now I would get the 8800GT. A great card at a great price.

By the way what res do you game at? (suprised no one has asked yet):p

But then with a 6800 I guess its 1280x1024 (or less;)):D

An 8500GT would be slower than his current card!! and although an 8600GT would be an improvement it would struggle to play mass effect at a decent res as the recommend card for the game is a 7900GTX and the 8600GT fall short when compared to the older GTX. Hes better of sticking with his current card tbh.

Ok. Im now looking at the EVGA 8800GTX 768MB GDDR3 384bit Dual DVI PCI-E would this card hold up against the most recent game you think?

For its age the 8800gtx is still a great card, it still has its place and is still the choice card for v/high resolution gaming, dont spend to much on one though, the 8800gt is really not far behind it and is significantly cheaper. If you can get one for a great price it would be worth thinking about :)

What's the better of these two cards.

XFX 9800GTX 512MB DDR3 Dual DVI TV Out PCI-E or PNY 8800GTX 768MB GDDR3 Dual DVI HDCP HDTV out PCI-E

Okay, out of the help from this thread and advice from friends I have decided to go with the "ASUS NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTX 768MB GDDR3 DVI HDCP HDTV out PCI-E". Do you guys think this was a good choice? What type of proformance increase will I be seeing going from the 6800?

If you want your hardsware now, you can't go wrong with an 8800GT.

but stop writing in red for crying out loud, it's painful to read.

We still have no idea of what resolution you will be playing at so we can’t really make a recommendation or give you a plain yes or no answer unfortunately.

Well to be honest I haven't really played PC games for a few years. The last PC game I played was Americas Army v2.2 and I used to play that at max resolution the game could pump out. Higher is better, no?

EDIT: 1680x1050 I belive was the rez I used to play at....

8800GTX @ 1680x1050 is fantastic in nearly all games, apart from Crysis. And you will notice on hell of an improvement from a 6800.
