Sorry about the new thread, but my 3d Mark was a disaster on my new ocuk GeForce 7900 GS

Read it and weep. Bad fps and almost non funtioning cpu during the cpu test! :(

What PSU do you have?
What clock settings is the graphics card at?

On my 7900GTO in my current PC, 3Dmark likes to use the 2d clocks instead of the 3d clocks, god knows why.

PSU came standard with the box. I have no idea what it is. Know how I would find out?
Ive run the card at safe setting and slightly raised at 500Mhz. no difference at all.

Could it be a poorly connected power cable? Could I be stripping power from the cpu?
 
Erm, thats not the highest score in 3DMark06, but its actually pretty good, and that CPU test is DESIGNED to kill CPUs. My system only makes it to 5749 marks, and as you can see its a fair bit stronger than yours, with an overclocked dual core, amd64 system, and a strong graphics card, not to mention more ram, and other people have much stronger systems than mine too.

You've got nothing to worry about, the CPU test thing is normal, and you're not meant to have had high fps, its a benchmark designed to stress systems to the limit, whether they be uber rigs or more average ones, same way 2005, and 2003 etc were before it.

I cant see why you're too worried, go try out some of your games, at medium settings, then come back if its still awful :)

I should have explained.....my system is crapping out completely on game slike BF2 - even run onthe lowest settings. I have no idea what to do to set it right. But the card is performing terribly, even compared to my ATI 1300.

I have downloaded rivatuner...do you think this would help?
I'm also using a diff driver now... NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS by TweaksRUs

I have no idea why is would stutter so much even ont he lowest settings.
 
If thats the case I'd recommend a few things.
1) Check your PSU as recommended above, incase it cant provide enough power for your card, and this is bringing your system down. Can you open your case and tell us the ampages on the different volt lines, it should be on a sticker on the psu, ie 12V1 - 17A
2)If you didnt reinstall windows when changing cards it might be advised, as Nvidia and ATI drivers never seem to cooperate nicely, and people have reported big improvements going from a fresh install.

oh., I didn;t know Iwas supposed to match volt lines.....maybe thats something Ive done wrong...The box had no detailed instructions at all. I just plaugged it in to whichever connectors I could find.

I cant see any voltage indicatins just numbers on each plug like p5, p6 etc


The graphics card came with 2 plugs. Identical looking. I plugged them into p4 and p5. There is one plug remaining I could use, which is p6.


the output on the side is listed is 300watt max. Which doesn't sound great. In fact it sounds pretty awful.

Sounds like that could be your problem. It MIGHT be fine, but being a generic 300W PSU isnt a good thing. Ideally, you want to be looking for one of at least 400W, which has at least 15A on a 12V rail. If it has dual rails ie 2x12V at say 16A and 14A all the better.

Perhaps try having a look around at PSU prices, because I think quite likely we've hit the nail on the head, and that PSU isnt able to provide reliable power under stress.

On a better PSU, the sticker on the side which tells you the output wattage, usually gives you a break down of the Amp capabilities too. I believe the 7900 series recommend a quality 450W psu (might even say somewhere on the box if its a full retail job from someone like xfx or sapphire, although a decent 400W one should do it, but if you can, never skimp on a PSU, it can cause problems down the line :)

without having seen the system in action it's very hard to make a conclusive judgment as to where it's falling down. I'm not 100% sure it's the PSU however I would replace that psu with a branded one asap.A more efficient and stable power supply is the basis of all good systems.

I just got on Teamspeak and got called a noob about about 12 americans who who just told me to get a bigger psu. I bought a Hiper HPU-4M580 Type R 580W ATX2.2 PSU - Black.


Hopefully this should do the trick. That along with the 2 gigs of ram. I think overclockers is doing alright out of me this week :rolleyes:


Once again, thanks everyone here for trouble shooting my problem.
 
Should be more than enough to discount a PSU causing any problems. Theres been a few Hiper reliability issues for a couple of people recently, but get a working one and they're a pretty nice unit :)

If you fit that, and still have problems with your system, then come running straight back, you'll have cured one problem waiting to happen anyway, and if it works fine now, enjoy your new card :)

You;re not going to believe this...the fan is on the wrong side of the box. I need one on the bottom , not the top. So thats that cancelled.

I'm...a.....I can't say it....
 
Dont worry, they often show the fans on the underneath facing up in pictures so you can see them. As long as the leads come out the front behind the cd rom drives, and the power adaptor connector points out the hole in the back of your case, you can simply turn the PSU over, so the fan faces down into the case. PSUs work upside down/right side up :D

Unless you have some seriously wacky case, thats PSU should be fine, and Im sure it'll make sense once you see it :)
 
i'm starting to get noob fatigue. I just worked all this out. On a side note, do all these new psus come with the right amount of power out cables? Just in case I decide to run a cheap sli set up....

I just installed direct x 9 again and it improved the score from

3759

to

3985

I have no idea what this means, but I'm guessing its no improvement.
