hey all, my pc is as sig. As you can see it is fairly powerful with a crappy x1800xt being the poorest component gaming wise by far, not to mention it sounds like my dyson.

Anyway, what you lot recommend??
I was holding out for a gf9 but I have heard that they are to be rubbish. I have read many 9800gtx threads but as always I assume 99% of the stuff is rumours.

I dont have a set budget but I cannot see myself paying over 250 for a card unless its awesome and going to last a year minimum.
Thanks:)

There are plenty of choices, all good in their price/performance bracket:

8800 GTX - I know they are old but £215 IT'S A STEAL!!:p (would be better for your res and for AA AF)

8800 GTS

8800 GT 512MB

i got exactly same spec pc as you, and i just got the gtx 768meg ver5sion yesterday, its great, over 5k jump in 3dmark, but need to test it out more yet.

I put off a 8800series as I thought I would get the 9800gtx on release as if I splash out over 300quid on a pc part I want it to be fine for games for a year or two. I almost got a 8800gts 640mb a year ago. Kinda wish I had now as the 9800gtx benches are crappy.

The 9800 is just a 8800 with a faster clock.

Not worth the money over the 8800 series.

In fact the 9800 is not next gen.

Its a dull release from NV that is nothing but marketing drivel.

Agreed, the 9800 GTX is just an 8800 GTS with an extra SLi connector so it can be TRi SLi'd, and they also changed the first 8 to a 9 in the naming, not worth the money its going to cost, as you can buy that exact card now, just without the extra SLi connector, and without the first 8 having a number 9 stuck over it for only £170 here :-

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-017-PV <--- thats the 9800 GTX there.

No way is an extra connector, and a stuck on number 9 gona be worth an extra £130+

If you want to pay £300+ for it though, then ill buy that GTS there, ill sellotape a number 9 over the first 8 on the cooler, and over the one on the box (or if you want i can just scribble em out and write the 9's on), then seen as it will be second hand as ive opened it, and will have a connector missing, ill do you it for £250, £50+ off. :D

hmmm, are nvidia to make 'proper' 9800s in the next 6 months?? As in a card worthy of the title?
I imagine the 9800gx2 to be a bit of a ripoff, is the ati dual core one ok?? (provided it isnt as loud as my x1800).
it just feels a little late to gt a 8800 series.
im not afraid to spend a little on cards, i usually get the best one possible without the price being stupid, as it seems to go up exponentionallyfor the top of the range ones:p

It runs hot enough to melt diamonds. And, is essentially two 8800GTS, but, slower per GPU. There saying they have something waiting in the wings but, take what ever judgement you like from that, the reason being could be anything.

I'd pick up a cheap 8800GTX or an 8800GTS while you still can. Pretty soon we will be pretty much forced into buying 9 series.

And ofcourse, not neglecting the ATI cards, though 3870X2 is nearer £300 I think am right in saying. My fav card of the moment though, all but its size

to me it sounds like the 9800gtx would be better named an 8850 or 8900.
I am getting the idea to get a 512mb gts and ebay if off when the real 9800s are out?
I imagine I would get near retail back off it anyway as ebay is ful of tards?

You could just grab the HIS ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 for £258.49 inc VAT.
Then keep it for the next year or two before your next proper upgrade again.
