New Graphics Card LOADS of tearing (Locked FPS)

So i recently built a second PC, went from, a 680 to a 970, and i've been playing a few games maxed graphics LOCKED< at 60fps on a 120hz monitor, and the screen tearing on some of these games is monsterous, games like Dishonoured, Crysis, Ethan Carter, Borderlands 2 the tearing is so rampant, its not just a distinct line on either 120hz or 60hz, it makes the whole screen stutter tear sometimes, and it always happens roughly in the same areas in each games.

Vsync fixes the issue, but really makes input lag a big problem in most games. And it also means capping my fps.

If i play at 120hz the tearing is significantly reduced and it doesnt judder the whole screen, but again it shouldnt be that tempermental just because of a framerate, happens on all my monitors regardless. I havent got my other PC built to test if it happens on that.

Is there anything external that might cause excessive tearing, i have no overclocks what so ever on anything, i7 4790k, GTX 970, ,16GB RAM, Asus Motherboard.

I dont ever recall games tearing this much, i know i've been on 120hz for a while but some of these screen tearing levels are actually unholy, i cant even play ethan carter without it stuttering from tearing and stutter because of the inept engine the game uses.

Please, Any advice would be so good right now!

I'm confused.

You've locked your fps to 60 on a 120hz monitor - Why?

Then you don't want to use V-sync because it means capping your FPS? But you've already said you've locked it to 60 anyway so it's already capped?

Would you rather a smooth 60fps consistently or a stuttering mess of an uneven framerate varying between 70 to 120 constantly on unoptimized games? I mostly lock demanding games at 60fps to save my GPUs life and to stop my eyes aching from the framerate dipping and dopping all the time. (sorry reading that back felt kind of snarky and snappy but i didnt mean it that way, i just dont like fps fluctuating too much as it gives my eyes horrible strain)

If i can run the game at 120 consistently that isnt the problem, the problem is what happens when locking at 60fps.

Does it do the same if you remove the FPS cap?

I cant really actively tell with the fps cap off because then the stuttering of an uneven framerate gets in the way.

But lets say i play a game where i know i can lock 120fps no problem, Deus Ex HR for example. The game will be silky smooth, the only tear line will be one and it wont be very distinct, infact its pretty much nonexistant. And actually HR is a good example of a game locked at 60fps which doesnt really have much screen tearing still, theres some hugely ,problematic games like the ones i listed then theres ones i can lock the fps to 60 no problem, Deus Ex HR, Just Cause 2, Doom 3 just to name a few.

Limiting your fps to less than the refresh rate of the monitor will give you screen tearing. My Asus overclocked at 85hz does the same. Setting the FPS cap to 90 for me fixed it!

I'll give that a shot, i can maintain 90fps consistently.

Trouble is, this screen tearing doesnt feel like any i've experienced before, it feels somewhat speradic and happens in certain locations, for example in frostburn canyon in BL2 i get it very consistently and it tears in one section, across a line, and then it will also tear the whole bottom of the screen for a split second, that section will stutter whilst the section above may not stutter. #

But i also want to add, the same tearing happens on 60hz, albeit sometimes not AS bad, but Dishonoured and Ethan Carter, sometimes sniper elite 2 stutter reaaaallly badly on either setting.

I will give your input a shot my friend!

It doesnt matter If you lock/ cap framerate, you will get tearing unless you enable vsync or have a gsync/ adaptive sync display.

The display and gpu are out of sync. A higher refresh monitor will help with perfeption of tearing but unless the display and gpu are synced then tearing will occur.

I'd personally remove the cap and just let it render what it can. You're still going to notice tearing as your monitor is 120hz . Anything less (where you've capped it) you may well see tearing.

I tried but unfortunatly the devices i have only record at 30fps so it doesnt translate well, and using fraps wont pick it up either.

essentially this happens.

The stutter one only happens in some games, (dishonoured, ethan carter, borderlands 2, crysis, but will seem better at 120fps (will still happen but drastically reduced)

I always though that tearing only happens when the card is rendering frames faster than the monitor refresh rate. So just turning off V-sync and capping will sort it out? Because he'll normally won't get huiger than 120fps on modern games anyway?

And with v-sync on you get a bit of judder if the card renders higher than the refreash rate of the monitor as the they are trying to sync? Hence way G-Sync is big now?

I let my frame rate run what ever the GPUs output @120hz and get no stutter when dropping.. So long as it don't drop to low..

The reason you getting more frame tearing is because you limit the frame rate to 60fps on 120Hz the monitor is refreshing twice the amount vs the fps resulting in double tearing..

Nope tearing happening because the display and gpu isn't in sync with each other.. The monitor will be refreshing at different times vs the time the gpu is sending the frames..

Vsync works because the gpu frames will match up with the refresh. Even if you limit frame rate to 60fps the display will still not be in sync with each frame coming from the gpu.
